JJ needs more than 5 years to establish the program

My take on this season is that JJ will need more than 5 years to get this program airborne.

I think he can do it only because he has done it before. Not because the product I saw on the field this year was a reflection of a great coaching staff "coaching up" poor talent to a mediocre season.

I saw poor talent that was not helped by the coaching staff. I certainly see no hope for a significant turnaround next year.

Our talent foundation is just too low. I see no defensive stoppers. I see no defensive line whatsoever. When the game is on the line we do not have the Dline to stop that 3rd and 3 type situation. As long as this is the case we do not win - period.

We need to think of this as JJ gets us respectible in 5 years but the next coach will be the one who puts us over the top.

unfortunately so. only way it changes is if we get a couple unusually monstrous recruiting classes to get the ball rolling

I think he only needs 5 years. Assuming that timeline starts 3 years from now.

so after 5 years. when he takes us 7-5, or 8-4 at best. Then he leaves. And we have a new coach come in with a new system and our roster is full of R and S players... Then its back to the same. Unless Reinbold or someone can take over.

As long as the D has been built up and is in good shape when he leaves SMU should be able to win a few games while a new O is installed.

The recruiting class coming in is one of our best in a long time. Scout has us 2nd in the conference right now. Hope!

I'm sorry, but it doesn't take five years.

Let's not start the doom and gloom yet. If we still do not have a winning season by year 3 of JJ's coaching tenure then let's start crying. Look folks, we knew this was going to be a rough season when a true freshman qb was announced the starter. A freshman qb learning a tough offense with around half the starters being freshmen or redshirt freshmen. Also, the suspensions really hurt this team. I believe we would have beat S. Miss if we had both our starting receivers. Our D held a winning team to a touchdown in one half....pretty impressive. We are all frusterated but the recruiting is improving and 5 years is a long time to get this thing right. Although we did not win a conference game, many of our games were very competitive even with around half the starters being freshmen. When it is time for JJ to leave here, you will get a lot of quality coaches looking at this job assuming we are still competitive with the pay. Cheer up folks.....we are the best 1 win team in the country.

Agree with all your points except the one about a 1 win team. Nothing to cheer about when you are the world's tallest midget. That ain't saying much.

Just look at Rice, they are headed to their 2nd bowl game in 3 years. Does that mean their program is now "established"? Not necessarily. But they are headed in the right direction in a very short period of time, and that is all while they have had 2 coaching changes.

Given the current state of CUSA, I think we can see a bowl game in the next year or two. If we don't, then I'll be pissed off just like everybody else.

Let's be serious here. This is C-USA, not the Big 12. SMU could win 7 games next year. Probably won't, but could. This is not a strong conference, and it will not take more than five years to put some wins on the board. Improved QB play, consistent WR play, and (most importantly) a little bit of defense can turn a 1 win team into a 5 win team in a heartbeat in this conference. Let's hope it happens.

the worst part about all of this is that we are in CUSA. If we win 7, 8 or 9 wins everyone thinks it'll be a great story, everyone will want to come here, etc.

Problem is, look at Rice. How many people outside of Texas know they went 9-3 this year? They wound up the season with a game against their biggest rival with a fan base in the same city and still only drew what would fit into Ford.

and rice got blown out by texas earlier this year. when you lose by 42 to anyone, you will get written off. only way you get recognition while playing in c-usa is if u put up big points and can shut down conference opponents. also gotta crush non-conf opponents. the conference lost credibility this year when tulsa struggled with ucf early and lost at arkansas. ecu also underperformed in a few games as well after starting out strong

If we don't have 6-7 win season next year we will not attract the recruits in year 3 to see this program through a new coach when JJ leaves in year 5.

We either re-sign JJ in year 3 to a 5 year extension or announce a "coach in waiting". I think you will the "coach in waiting" played out in more and more programs as administrations tire of hiring a new coach who loses while he rebuilds with "his guys".
