Alabama no. 1?

Postby jimhagle » Tue Dec 02, 2008 9:15 am

Mighty Alabama's opponents combined win-loss record is a gaudy 66 wins and 76 losses. Now that is what I call a deserved ranking. Not-

We'll find out what they're all about when they return to the Georgia Dome to play Florida.

Isn't Florida a healthy favorite?

I think someone said they were a 10 point favorite.
When will I start feeling stimulated??

Are you seriously contending Alabama should not be No. 1? The only BCS conference team that is still undefeated? Is their schedule as tough as OU's or Texas'? No way...but the simple fact reamins...they are UNDEFEATED in a BCS conference. They are undefeated in what is historically the strongest conference in all of college football. I think the Big 12 is superior this year alone, but Alabama and Florida have shown that they are ever bit as deserving of being given "elite" team status as Texas, OU, Tech, or USC. And the defenses in the Big 12 are like paper mache.

There is no doubt that Alabama is at least 2 years ahead of schedule and benefitted from a weaker SEC this season. They are likely to get bounced from the national title discussion quickly by Florida. But to contend that one-loss teams should be ahead of an undefeated SEC team is ludicrous. Strength of schedule and the perceived team strength of Texas and OU should NOT override the fact that both teams did not take care of business and LOST games. That is without a doubt the most important thing.

I would not vote Bama #1. Utah is undefeated and has played a more difficult schedule with wins over BYU, TCU and Oregon State. Has Bama beaten 3 better teams? Nope. Not saying I'd vote Utah #1 either but iI think Bama is maybe the 4th -6th best team in the country (on par with Utah).

USC is not a Top 3-4 team.

Georgia and LSU are much better, and Clemson and even Auburn are probably better. Utah's underranked, but Bama's schedule isn't bad. You could make the argument those Georgia and LSU games are just as tough as any on the overrated Big 12 slate.

LSU and Georgia, really? LSU almost lost to Troy, Got pounded by Ole Miss, and lost to a bad Arkansas team? Georgia lost by 39 to UF and lost to a fair GT team?

Homer :D - SEC football is awesome but, outside of Fla and Bama, it's down this year. 5 loss LSU that almost lost to Troy at home? And I can't believe you mention Auburn...seriously??? They have 1 win over a team with a winning record...Tennessee Martin!

Seriously??? Ole Miss could wear out Oregon State, and I would be pretty sure they could beat BYU. TCU would probably give them a tussle. Georgia would beat all 3 of those teams. LSU would beat Oregon State and likely BYU and it would be atough game with TCU. Clemson would beat Oregon State.

This is all moot anyway...because hopefully we all agree the winner of the Bama Florida game should go to the title game. I just hope the people who consistently bash on Alabama will come back and admit they were wrong should Alabama surprise everyone and upset Florida.

Never count Saban out. Whatever you think about the guy as a person, he is an incredible game planner and motivator.

I would agree most years but not this one...
LSU 7-5
Clemson 7-5
Auburn 4-8
Georgia has no wins over teams currently in the top 35.

Record is not the only criterion you can look at in this argument. You truly believe that Oregon State and BYU could beat Georgia?? You didn't reference 8-4 Ole Miss. I believe that team is very underrated and would beat any of the three teams you listed, although TCU would be tough for them. There is no doubt LSU is down, but you know that Oregon State or BYU v. LSU would be a coin flip.

And I didn't include Auburn in this argument because their offense is a disaster. But they had the #8 defense in the country, and Bama still plowed right over them.

Does anyone remember the 2004 LSU-Oregon State game at Baton Rouge where Oregon State missed 3 extra points and a field goal? LSU won by 1 point.
