The Death of Late Game Sportsmanship

Warning: Do not schedule a team that thinks it has a chance at a BCS Bowl if you are going to cry about running it up late in the game. That quaint little custom practiced by the more traditional Coaches like Mack Brown is officially DEAD. Instead it is now how many straight games you can score 60 to get into the BCS National Championship including throwing bombs late in the game to score 60 for 6 straight games. Where is the criticism for Stoops that was heaped upon Leach when all he did was run the ball against SMU out of a passing offense. I told you when Tech tried to pad its victory over SMU that Leach was getting unfair criticism based on "how the game is played". You see style points count. I don't want to hear any more whining-if you don't like it-drop the team from the schedule if the appear to have a BCS worthy team. Style point do count and this season was decided by style points.

What a sad commentary on the state of "college athletics".

Leach, as well as any other coach, who deliberately embarrasses an opponent for style points is "classless" IMHO!

The "Spread" offenses being played by power schools against inferior opponents is a major cause of this discrepancy.

Be_atch all you want but at least USC still plays "football" with real quarterbacks under center.

Leach, Stoops, Meyer, et al. sure produce a lot of Pro QB's running up the score as they do!

 <---- Texas Fans

I don't want to hear any more whining

neither do I... Texas threw a "bomb" (51 yd TD in the 4th qtr) to go up 56-24 on Missouri. Texas scored with two minutes left against A&M to make it 49-9. Texas scored against Rice with under 4 minutes left to go up 52-10. Texas COULDNT run the score up against TECH, OSU, or OU. Enough [deleted]. Mack Brown knows how it works...

What are these head coaches supposed to do?

I've never seen the actual algorithm for the current revised BCS computer rankings. If it in anyway gives style points or uses data from the coaches poll then margin of victory must be important.

You cannot fault guys like Stoops or Brown with so much at stake. In years past they may not have done this but their job is to get their team to the BCS championship game by any means possible. Its a flawed stupid system but thats what we have.

I remember Lou Holtz took out all his starters early when SMU played ND post death penalty. He was purposely trying not to punish us. Those days are over.

I have no clue about the style points but can it influence other coaches for the Coaches Poll?

I can remember him crying after UT beat them that the better team did not win.

There is a big difference in scoring 50 points in 3 quarters and ending with 60, and running a play (pass or run) for the end zone when well ahead, when the clock would expire if no play were run. That is the difference with Leech and Stoops.

Absolutely. Running plays, passing or running, are a part of the game. It is the calling of timeouts in the last minute of the game, or continuing to hurry to the line with a quick snap to get in an extra few plays that is the difference between "playing the game out" and bad sportsmanship.

Most of the computer inputs take the either the square or cube root of margin of victory in order to significantly reduce the effect this has on the rankings.

Texas must beat OSU or their claims of unfair treatment are null and void - over and out!!

Remember, that's what everyone said about Cal after Cal lost in the Holiday Bowl after UT aced them out of the Rose Bowl.

GO BUCKEYES!! SAW 'EM OFF and SHUT 'EM UP!
