Rice QB is MVP ?

Postby Pony in SA » Thu Dec 11, 2008 2:37 pm

Just returned from a Kiwanis charity lunch event and was told while there that Rice QB Clement is our conferences MVP. Is this true ?

If so, really glad when Chase contacted SMU himself and tried to inquire about our school he was told not to bother because he did not have Div. 1 skills. Would have been nice to have him as our QB this year and redshirt BLM for a year.

Or play a returning 2 year starter at QB who was shattering SMU records and let BLM redshirt. Just a thought - has anyone considered this? lol

May want to call Phil Bennett at Pitt and remind him of that.

Kid reminds me alot of our WR Willis.

I love his mobility. Although many will probably disagree I believe
JW is just as good if not better than the Owl.

That's a BS comparison. They don't even play the same position.

QB or WR, at least gets a chance to play in a bowl. in fact he's been to a couple of them in the last few years.

sorry we can't say the same thing about JW

No, clearly Willis is the more versatile player....

I also believe the WR Dillard at Rice had interest in SMU but could not get in school or was told he was not good enough for a scholarship......not sure but I am sure there are some on this board that have better information on this. I am actually pleased to see Rice do so well. They deserve it. They run a clean program and have academic barriers that hinder the players they can get. They have done more with less while SMU has done less with more.

Dillard did want to come but Bennett ddint think he was any good. Also Casey Fitzgerald wanted to play here, but we didnt offer and he was the best WR in the sun belt the last few years

Just shows you Bennetts recruiting abilities, This year we could have had Dillard, Fitzgerald, And Clement.

Im guessing 5 wins had we had those three

Dilliard, Fitzgerald, Sanders and Robinson-could have been unbelievable. But seriously, if SMU wants to reach the stated goals for the program that's the type of receivers we need-TD makers and big play makers -not 8 yards and a cloud of dust. There are literraly hundreds of receivers that can catch 40-50 balls in this offense. SMU needs the guys that can do more. And this offense should attract them.

Dillard is from SA also. My understanding is he was told he would have to develop "better hands" and speed.

How did that work out again ?

Clement, Dillard and Fitzgerald are great players and now looking back we wish they played for us. Obviously Bennett's recruiting did not get the job done.

My serious question is whether these guys were solid prospects with DI offers that Bennett passed on? Or were Rice and UNT the only options for these guys and they beat the odds to become impact players?

No doubt that Clement, Dillard and Fitzgerald have talent. But couldn't coaching have a little something to do with it, too? Read: Todd Graham and David Bailiff.
