He missed the part about the open bar at the hotel and the pre-game trip to Juarez.

We were 10-1, ranked #6 in the nation and all we could garner was a Sun Bowl bid.

Just further proof that SMU needs to have its focus on BB.

If you followed your reasoning to its logical conclusion we should give up basketball as well. We're never going to have a large following in any sport - never going to have the political or financial sway to earn major bowl bids, lots of TV appearances or favoritism from the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

If we drop or de-emphasize football, we'll have even less of a profile.

I think the answer is SMU needs to focus, period.

Didn't say give up on either sport, but the reality is SMU will never ever draw big in FB in this current conference, or for that matter, any conference that does not have UT, A&M or Tech as its members.

It is far easier to have 8k loyal BB fans than 30k FB fans. And if we truly aspire to Top 25, we certainly don't need any 'favoritism' from the NCAA BB selection committee.

Everyone here is sooooo looking forward to the day SMU finally goes bowling....me...I'll take a wait and see approach...as I suspect we will play in a meaningless game in a stadium with more empty seats than fans.

Would much much rather play in the NCAA BB tournament against quality opponents, or even a non-conference game against UT at Moody.

Tell me again...which game next year at Ford has you excited?????

That is the attitude that got our [deleted] kicked by Bama.

The Sun Bowl was a somewhat bigger deal back then, I think.

No. Not for a top 10, 1 loss team. The Sun Bowl is a bigger, better Bowl today than it was then.

I remember the outcry of us going to the Sun Bowl, and agreed that we should have been in a better bowl. I don't disagree with you, but there were a lot less bowls back in those days. No matter, we should have taken care of business and won the dang thing.

What about the score - 4th Q and OSU ahead 3-0. More like a hockey score.

I would equate it to Penn State, this year, if they had been sent to the Independence Bowl. You are correct that there were far fewer bowls and fewer teams getting into them but there were lower ranked teams going to better bowls that year. The fact that there were fewer bowls and less commercial savvy meant that traveling fan base was much more important than team ranking. We have never traveled well and that, in my opinion, was the reasoning.

I agree and our lack of national respect was also demonstrated by getting screwed out of the national championship the year before. We had lots of folks working against us in a number of circles.
