The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award is an annual College Football award given to the Division I-Bowl Subdivision head coach whose team excels on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The award was established in 1976 to honor the values that Coach Dodd exemplified. The recipients are chosen by a selection committee composed of college football experts.

The 2008 recipient is the University of Texas' Mack Brown.

If it really does take into account the team's actions in the classroom and in the community, I would think they missed the mark on this one. Doesn't Texas have an extremely low graduation rate? And their off the field problems have been discussed at length on here. ( see most posts by insane pony posse.) As a coach, however, his on the field success and recruiting are excellent.

I don't question his class, and as a recruiter he might be without peer. But I can't remember a game when he made a significant in-game change that affected the outcome of a game. He undoubtedly is a good coach, but I've never seen anything to suggest he's one of the elite.
