Former Madison standout Shawnbrey McNeal confirmed Sunday that he is transferring to SMU from Miami.

McNeal spent two years with the Hurricanes but is returning to the area in part to care for his ailing mother.

"I get to play in front of my home crowd again, and I want for my mom to have a chance to see me play," McNeal said.

He has applied for a waiver to gain eligibility immediately because of his family circumstances.

SMU averaged 41.4 rushing yards per game.

McNeal played sparingly at Miami, rushing for 152 yards in two seasons. He appeared in seven games this season but did not play in the last four, including a 24-17 loss to California in the Emerald City Bowl.
