Guy Morriss, who guided Baylor to an 18-40 record from 2003-'07, is expected to be named the head football coach at Texas A&M-Commerce. The school has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. today.

He replaces Scotty Conley, who was fired after going 24-27 in five years with the Lions.

Morriss' best season at Baylor was a 5-6 mark in 2005. Baylor had won just one Big 12 game in the previous 36 tries before Morriss arrived, and the team won seven in his first four years. But Morriss could never get the Bears over .500 and was let go in 2007.

He spent the 2008 season as the offensive line coach at Division II Kentucky State.

A 1973 TCU graduate, Morriss spent 15 seasons as a center in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles (1973-'83) and New England Patriots (1984-'87). He came to Baylor from Kentucky, where he posted a 7-5 mark in 2002 and was 9-14 in two years.

Heh,

I played football my first year out of high school at East Texas State (what aTM Commerce was called back then) before transfering to SMU. Was a fun little school in the middle of nowhere and football was really SMALL time there, the stadium is smaller than most decent high schools.....nothing like a bus ride out to West Texas....

That is really starting over, can't even see that as being a launching pad for anything.

Still, I always have a fondness for that place in my heart :P

hmm...well, it's smaller, but it does have something in common with another D-1A football school in the DFW area

No question what the high and low tier of academics are in the area....

Wait a minute. According to that link, TCU is in a suburban area, but NTSU is in an urban area? What the hell is that?

He must have not saved any money from his pro career and HC gigs at UK and BU. He must LOVE coaching because he spent the last year as the offensive line coach at Division II Kentucky State.

Too bad he doesn't have the same payout that Fran has from A&M...to do nothing.

Former Asst. AD Carlton Cooper is the athletic director out there. Great guy in the SMU Athletic Department and I for one wish him the best of luck in Commerce.
