"I've known Peyton Manning for a long time and I really love the kid. But when I went and watched Ryan Leaf workout he was impressive. I came away excited about coaching Ryan Leaf. He is going to be a franchise guy."

Because June didn't recruit him but PB did. PB failed at SMU and June took his old job.

Are you suggesting Bo Levi might not be a "franchise" guy?

A lot of people made that mistake about Leaf.

"What killed me," says Manning, "was when I'd see the so-called unnamed executive quoted as saying, 'Leaf has upside, Manning doesn't.' How'd you like to be 21 or 22, and you've already peaked. Does that make any sense?"

I'd take a QB as good as Ryan Leaf was IN COLLEGE any day.

pb would have moved peyton manning to tight end because of his upside

Leaf had all the physical tools to be great at any level. Unfortunately, his head did not have the same set of tools.

The guy was a Chargers Coach, what the hell was he supposed to say? "Holy Lord that Leaf guy is a total headcase!"

Illness, Injury and mismanagement had a lot to do with Leaf's failure too.

The Arrowhead game in '98 never should have involved Ryan Leaf. He had no one to throw to, a line that sent Stan Humpries into retirement, and NOBODY to throw to. Eric Metcalf was done, and everyone else in the receiving corp were inexperienced turds. When your best receiver is Charlie Jones, you are [deleted].

By the time the first season was over, his wrist was destroyed. He never had a chance after that. Mike Holmgrin was a pretty good coach too, and he believed that Leaf could turn it around in Seattle.

The guy was and is an arrogant jerk, but he had talent and could have been special.

That is compelling, however I think you should also consider this:

I agree he's a franchise guy. I'm willing to bet he's working at McDonald's any day now.

Agreed. Leaf was already on the team when he got there. Be worried if he drafted him.
