Passing gameWondering if anyone has really watched New Mexico State over the last couple of years. I know June Jones and Hall Mumme are supposedly friends, and they have shared some concepts for the passing game, but does anyone really know how similar the offenses are? The reason I'm asking, of course, is to try to guess how quickly McDermott picks up the system. It's invaluable, of course, to have him in school so he can go through spring ball - just wondering if Mumme's system allows him any kind of a head start.
Hummes offense has simple reads, really similar to Norm Chow's (which Leach uses).
JJ offense includes RnS, WCO and several other route packages; but also specific timing patterns (Marchibroda) depending on what the defense shows. The QB has to make many more reads, but JJ has simplified those reads tremendously. QBs in his system has to do more and in less time. Mumme and Leach are more horizontal, JJ is more vertical in attack. Many of Mummes screen packages are of the Mouse Davis genre. Last year (@ SMU) we saw a very vanilla 'high school' version of JJs offense. JJ will also intermix the option and several zone-read plays into his offense when it is firing on all cylinders. McDermott will be the scout team QB to service our secondary.
this article diagrams the Mumme/Leach connection. Leach coached under Mumme at both Valdosta St. and Kentucky.
