* The famous "We Are Penn State" chant began when the football team responded to segregation, Lauren Boyer writes in the Centre Daily Times.

"In 1948, Penn State was set to play Southern Methodist University in the Cotton Bowl. Triplett said he remembers that rumors circulated that SMU wanted to meet with Penn State to discuss the team not bringing its black players. During this time, [Wally] Triplett credits guard Steve Suhey with coining the now-famous Penn State slogan.

'We are Penn State,' Triplett recalled Suhey saying. 'There will be no meetings.'"

Because none of the Dallas hotels would provide accommodations for the two African-American members of the Penn State team, the Penn State team ended up staying at a Naval Air Station 14 miles from Dallas.

LOL...actually, he was playing QB for Brown University that year. He joined the PSU coaching staff in 1950.

I just saw the Ernie Davis story on DVD.

Same situation with the Orange men during their appearance at the 1960 cotton bowl.

And people back then called Dallas "city of hate".. hmm.. wonder why?
