It's not like the Mustangs were dogs offensively in 2008, ranking 17th in passing offense in 2008. But the run-and-shoot offense was brand new and coach June Jones let freshman Bo Levi Mitchell quarterback this basketball version of football and take the growing pains that came with it.
Mitchell threw for 2,800 yards and 24 scores to go along with 23 interceptions' way too many drive-killers for this offense to reach its potential. Mitchell returns and will have competition to beat back as Jones will be looking for a trigger-man that can take this offense to the next level. Helping the cause will be the return of the team's top two wide receivers in Emmanuel Sanders and Aldrick Robinson. This unheralded duo accounted for 126 catches, 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2008.
This trio could be ready to take the next step in the evolution of this offense and that could be a huge benefit to fantasy owners by fall 2009. If Mitchell can cut his interceptions in half, he'll keep more drives alive and offer more opportunity to finish drives with scoring throws. Additionally, improvement in the 118th ranked defense will give Mitchell and the offense better field position more often, as well as the benefit of more turnovers and a shorter field on a more regular basis. Both of which will lead to more efficiency on offense' and in this offense, that means more scoring throws.
I can't help but be curious about what this offense is capable of in its second year with all the pieces that put together pretty good numbers in 2008 coming back. If they take the next step, there could be fantasy bonanzas aplenty in Mustang-land.

"Southern Methodist" sounds like something from the 1940's, let's just go with SMU.

Southern Methodist sounds better.
SMU sounds like we are one of the alphabet schools of the WAC

Major improvements in the offense doesn't turn the corner. Minor improvements in the defense means major improvement in the overall record.
The problem is and has been for two years a totally inept defense. Sure, cut down on interceptions and fumbles, stupid and stupid penalties keeps the offense eon the field more. But cut down on blown coverages and learn to stop a simple dive means less opponent points for the offense to overcome.
Fantasy football is all about offense. So an improved offense makes fantasy football teams better. In reality, defense wins and we don't have a defense.

Actually I stole that from a sign I saw at Baylor in 1984. Don't worry, we won in the last minute of the game, the great Don King to the great Ron Morris for the game winner.

One of the Trojan's Student Body cheers is the spell out where each letter is announced, S-O-U-T-H-E-R-N C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A, and concludes with the cheer "SOUTHERN CAL I FOOOORN IA"
And the full name "University of Southern California" decals for car windows were popular as well!

Southern Cal is very proper.
LSU is an exception, and it is a rather "state" school...
Alabama
Texas
Michigan
Florida
Oklahoma
Yeah, they are all called UA, UT, UM, UF, OU, etc...but what name gives them more "status"?
We are known outside of texas as Southern Methodist. In Texas, SMU for short.
The campus has made a rather politically correct push to be "known" as SMU - so as not to discourage our non-Methodists ...or non-Christians. Don't want to offend anyone.

"Southern Cal" is anathema to the University and all Trojans.
USC, SC, Southern California are all acceptable, but never "Southern Cal".
We are a private University with no ties whatsoever to that State University located in Berkeley.
If anybody is properly "Southern Cal" it would be UCLA, the southern sister University of "Cal"!

SMU graduates 30 students with masters degrees
Addis Ababa, February 29 (WIC) – Sikkim Manipal Unversity (SMU) of India today graduated 30 students with masters degrees through its distance program in Ethiopia.
The graduates are first batch and trained in journalism and mass communication, business administration, health care service, computer science, information technology and telecom technology.
Indian ambassador to Ethiopia, Gurjit Singh said through his representative that SMU is imparting distant education in various discipline since 2006 to Ethiopian students. He said today’s graduates are expected to discharge their shares for the economic growth of their county through justifying the faith reposed in them by the university.
Dr. Hirut Woldemariam, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at AAU on her part said Indian universities and scholars are significantly contributing in Ethiopia’s education sectors.
AAU is working to further strengthen the cooperation with universities of India, she said.
