According to this Web site, SMU beat writer Bobbi Roquemore was one of the 200 DMN employees let go yesterday.

I talked to her a week ago @ ford and asked her how she was doing, she mentioned that this was a possibility, was on her mind.

The Houston Chronicle did the same thing with the Rice Correspondent. If the DMN were smart they should just have an independent contractor relationship with Rivals or Scout or both on beat coverage. Then double-up with writers on game coverage. They have the contacts and specialization to cover the SMU scene the way it should. This is exactly what they have done with their recruiting coverage. Then they have reduced costs for salary, medical benefits. retirement etc. It could be one less source of information but this is the direction newspapers are going. I'd be kinda surprised if there was a new SMU beat writer in the traditional sense-I don't think the Chronicle is planning to replace the Rice correspondent who was extremely popular with Rice fans.

Sports Department looks like it may be impacted the most If they turn this into Pro Sports only paper I'm going to drop my subscription so fast-

The Houston Chronicle also let the UH beat writer go. Both MK Bower (Rice) and Michael Murphy (UH) were replaced by other Chronicle writers. It is sad to see.
