It's best not to get really jazzed or upset over what you see at one of these things.
Along with the NFL draft, these spring games might be one of most overhyped events.
Yes, I went -- mainly to renew my tickets -- and talked more with friends in the stands than actually watched the thing.

So basically it was a good warmup for the regular game activities of most of our fans, as well.

We spent most of the time trying to understand June's scoring system. It was over very quickly and could have been a much better event without exposing the players to injuries. They could have kicked off and even punted under rules that would limit contact, yet give the scrimage more of a game feel for the fans and players. Looks like we really didn't have enough players this year to really break it out into two seperate teams, next year maybe.
There were almost no students there, mostly old alumns like myself. We made mental notes for the powers to consider next year:
Make it more of a game with understandable phyical contact limitations.
Have the cheerleaders and pom pom squad in attendace. It will be the last time for many of the graduating seniors.
Have the band there (they showed up for the after game barbeque).
Invite the alumni band.
Have an announcer decribing the play, players and action. Without any sound it seemed dead in the stadium.
Have each player introduced by the PA announcer and use the scoreboard for their picutures, stats, hometown, year etc.
Have the sorority powder puff finals, immediately following or just prior to the game -- get the girls in the stadium to help the recruiting process, and of course the boys will then come. Someone suggested that just prior to the game two sorority games be played simulatenously from the 50 to the opposite end zones, and then the final after the spring game.
Make it a real spring carnival that is exciting for the students and excites the players and recruits. Wish we could sell beer! Regardless, spring games seem to have really taken off and become a major event for colleges and recruiting, we need to liven ours up and make it more entertaining for the fans.

Great suggestions. I noticed as I left the school that there were a lot of students involved in some sort of intramural activity. I thought that it was lousy timing.

I was reminded that basically the entire marketing department was let go earlier in the week, perhaps that had something to do with the lack of atmosphere--great timing!

Or maybe that was why they were let go.

They had powder puff going and something else on the lawn outside of Dallas hall as well. To me, the campus focus that day should have been the Spring game!

My thoughts exactly...great suggestions by MexMustang. Surely the marketing department has brought some of these up? This event is for recruiting, even more so because of the way June runs his spring game. Besides the obvious great degree and beautiful campus, SMU has amazing women! Saturday is dead enough on campus, need to get those girls in front of prospects...
