Morstead Update

Back in April many fans pondered the decision by the Saints to take a punter with their fifth round pick. The rookie from SMU has been very impressive early on in training camp. Thomas Morstead has been booming punts, since day one of camp.
“He is way ahead of his competition Glen Pakilak,†said the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert. Morstead averaged at least four seconds hang time on his punts this morning, and he has been consistent since he’s been in camp.
The backup punt returners struggled receiving Morstead’s punts. Devery Henderson and Tracey Porter dropped the ball on returns…Henderson had two drops; Porter had one drop in return work.

IMO, the only player post-DP that could start on our Pony Express teams.
Glad he is doing so well; here’s hoping for a long and prosperous NFL career.

Wonder if they will let him hit somebody in practice? He was definately the hardest hitter on the team in 2008!~

We all know you can't post without a backhanded slap at our team, but you screwed it up. That was Kellis Cunningham who rattled the brain of the Memphis return man, not Morstead.

Morstead was great, has a ton of upside in the pro's and was trained by one of the best, if not the best, special teams coaches in nfl history. SMU fans should be proud of him.
and it was Kellis Cunningham that put the lick on that return guy

Morstead at Tulane 2 years ago drilled a returner...

Or maybe it was last year... whenever we played AT Tulane last.

Perhaps, but I think the hit he was referring to and the one that got oos and ahs from the fans was the Cunningham hit.

Yeah, the kid who took the hit looked like Charlie Brown on the pitcher's mound as a hit ball flys by him...socks, shoes, shirt, shorts...scattered in all directions.

Also had our longest rush of the season in that game on a fake punt, didn't he?

2. Now I know why the Saints traded two draft picks for a punter.
The Saints went through three punters (and kickers) last season and finally settled on Glenn Pakulak.
Pakulak's 47.7-yard punting average was good for fifth on the season and 15th all-time.
For this reason, many Saints' fans, including myself, were scratching their heads when the Saints drafted two draft picks to move up and select Thomas Morstead in the fifth round.
After a two hours at practice, I now know why.
Pakulak was wildly inconsistent.
I timed his hang time under four seconds on multiple occasions.
Morstead, on the other hand, consistently recorded a hang time between 4.6 and 4.8 seconds.
If I were a betting man, I'd guess Morstead makes the team over Pakulak.
