Marcus Holyfield: DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

Part of SMU head coach June Jones' legacy surrounds his ability to find players in unusual ways.

Perhaps no player has followed a more unusual route to earning a college scholarship than freshman wide receiver Marcus Holyfield. A cousin of former world heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield and a high school basketball star, Marcus Holyfield hasn't played a single football game since he was in the eighth grade.

But after getting recommendations from a couple of coaches with close personal ties to Jones, Holyfield finds himself as the most unlikely wide receiver candidate in the Mustangs' 2009 preseason workouts. Holyfield recently visited with PonyFans.com to discuss his unusual path to the Hilltop and the expectations he has for the upcoming season.

June Jones also converted Tony Akpan out of Nigeria from basketball to football. He was a raw talent but a great athlete. I'm sure June is looking over the Senegal bb players at SMU, and if Doherty doesn't start the Senegalese look for Jones to talk them to switch if they have eligibility.

i hope it works at least better that the Tua Mahaley experiment at Hawaii. I'll put that one on the players head, not a hard worker, hope that changes.

Work hard Mr. Holyfield, we need you and everyone else on that roster to contribute.
