SMU sophomore DE hopes bigger is better
10:56 PM CDT on Monday, August 17, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK – Defensive end Taylor Thompson put on about 30 pounds of weight and muscle since spring camp but still managed to do a back flip on a wakeboard this summer.

"I used to wakeboard when I was skinny," Thompson said. "Don't tell Coach [June] Jones."

Thanks PonyPride for the link to DMN. I'm glad the DMN puts out a little piece on the Ponies every now and then.

I like the idea of using Thompson as a backup TE... Especially on goal line situations. A two TE set with him and Fleming could be pretty effective on the goal line. I wonder if we have a two TE set in the playbook?

I have been told he's actually 285 — some have suggested he got as big as 290.

Wow, nice to hear we have some more size on D. I figured he was probably going 260 or so.

He sure put in his work this summer.

I just hope he plays like he looks. Which is pretty good.

He is the guy I saw at the first practice who came out onto the practice field without his shirt on. There is no fat on this guy...280+ pounds of lean muscle. This is what a football player should look like.

That's awesome. Love to see beasts like this on D. He's gonna be one of the guys that open things up for Yenga. Hell, given his size, he's gonna open things up for himself. I'm enjoying hearing about the guys who put their work in this summer with Vic or on their own. Another sign of an improving overall program as a result of the players' buy-in.

6' 6" 280+ AND Thompson ran a 4.7 40 last year.Hopefully he is still Quick...if so, it probably won't be alot of fun playing against him.
