Coach June Jones
What most impresses you most about SFA junior quarterback Jeremy Moses? (Moses set NCAA records last year with 57 completions on 85 attempts against Sam Houston State.)
“He fires it around the field, that’s for sure. They’ve got some speed. He gets around. He’s definitely a Mike Leach kind of product. He throws the ball and it’ll go anywhere. And he stays within their system. He’s not a real runner, but he can run a little bit.”

“We’re hoping that we can contain the receivers. They’ve got a pretty quick running back and we know that they’re going to make some plays. We’ve just got to make more plays. We’ve got to knock the ball out, we’ve got to get some turnovers and we’ve got to create diversions. Put them in long-yardage situations.”

“They have an advantage in that they play against this offense all the time. … It’s one of those games that might last until one in the morning. Who knows?”

How is Miami-transfer running back Shawnbrey McNeal handling the wait on word from the NCAA?
“I think he’s been doing alright. He’s a hard worker. He’s a very conscientious guy. I’ve really got a fondness for him. He’s a good person and he’s had a tough go in his background. He’s got a smile on his face. He’s serious about practice and loves the game of football.”

If it goes his way, will he make the 2-deep?
“Oh, yeah. If he gets it, which I think it’s going to be decided by Thursday, most definitely he’ll be on the field.”

Have you had any contact with former wideout Justin Willis, who left the team last week?
“I’ve exchanged e-mails with him, but none other than that. … I do not expect him back. I will help him any way I can, as I told him. I understand where he’s at. … He’s a good kid and he’s going to be a success in life.”

Wes Suan, running backs coach
You’ve got an impressive stable of backs, especially if McNeal is cleared to play.
“Yeah, I think so. Again, it’s potential. We haven’t played a game yet and the performance level, we haven’t been able to evaluate a thing, really, under game situations. But they all work hard and they’ve got that intensity to pay attention to the fine details.”

What about Zach Line, the 6-1, 238-pound redshirt-freshman listed as the starter today?
“We throw the football, but Zach is an athlete who can [block and] run it too. So he really solidifies that position as far as being able to do both. But we’re very capable with Shawnbrey and Bryce Lunday and Chris Butler. And the guy that’s really been coming on is Ryan Moczygemba.

“We only have a spot for one guy but the competition and the camaraderie and attention to detail by the group is really well appreciated.”

What means success for your group on Saturday?
“We can only control what we do. We’re one-eleventh of the group out there. We want to work at 100-percent efficiency. … So, everything - from assignment, alignment , technique, effort, finishes - is what we strive for. Then, bottom line, we’ll grade the film that way. We could lose the game and feel good about the performance. Not about the loss, but about the performance. And wins will come.

Zach Line, running back.
How’s it feel to get the starting nod?
“It’s good. I think all the running backs are pretty solid, but I think my blocking … [and]
maybe a little size helped. … In high school I was a fullback for awhile, so the blocking kind of became second-nature.”

“I think I did well for what they expected out of me, but I think all the running backs are playing above what [the coaches] expect.”

Shawnbrey McNeal, junior-transfer running back
How are you handling the wait?
“It’s going pretty well. Today was a nice start of a week. … I’m pushing along. Hopefully, I’ll be able to play. If not, I’ll still be fine with everything.”

How are you adjusting to the Run and Shoot?
“It’s great. I actually ran the spread in high school, so it’s kind of like going back to my roots. Coach Jones has a nice scheme of running things, [his] organization and everything.”

Jones’ scheme often provides runners room to run.
“Every running back likes seeing daylight. Part of being a running back is being able to get a touchdown when things are rough. But the way Coach Jones runs everything, when you do call a running play, nine times out of ten, it’s going to work. We all believe in it. We all trust him and most likely he’ll make the right decision.”

What about your relationship with the other backs?
“It’s a good group of guys. They’re all unique individuals. They all welcomed me in as a family member, embraced me and encouraged me to fight, fight, fight. Keep fighting.”

Vic Viloria, strength and conditioning coach
Compare this team’s conditioning to last year’s.
“I think you look at the tempo of practice. It’s much better now. Number one, they’ve got the feel now for how Coach Jones likes to practice. Guys are running to the ball. … They know when to go full speed and when to go - I don’t want to say half-speed - but when to be under control, when you’re just going over assignments.”

“Now instead of coming out being nervous, thinking they’ve got make every single play, they’re coming out practicing like professionals. ... And I think that’s made it easier for them to hold more stamina, also also because of the work they put in this summer. That was a big part of it.”

Are they committed to your weight program?
“Yeah. … This year, now that the guys know what [Coach Jones] expects, he doesn’t have to say, ‘Get in the weight room.’ The guys are there. Guys are knocking on the door. I’ve got to kick them out now.”

“And they’ve noticed a difference. It’s gotten contagious now because the guys that have gotten bigger, they’ve put in the time and they’re seeing the transformation in their bodies. They look different, they’re practicing better and now the rest of the guys want to be a part of that.”

How much bigger can 6-6, 280 defensive end Taylor Thompson get?
“As a strength coach, I don’t like to put a ceiling on it, but he’s getting close. We’re going to have to start ordering some special jerseys to fit those big guns in. He’s a hard-working kid. He understands what he’s doing. … He’s trained the way a football player should. He’s not training as a body builder. … He’s putting on his weight in his legs, in his core, the abdominals and the lower back. And those are the places that are going to hold that weight. That will carry him through a season.”

After Saturday’s game, how will you know you did your job?
“The big thing I look for during the season, in terms of off-season success, is injuries. If we come off the field and we don’t have many soft tissue injuries - pulled hamstrings, quad tears, or muscle tears, that’s what I look for.”
