QB’s Redshirt Lifted

Postby SoCal_Pony » Thu Oct 09, 2003 7:07 pm

USC freshman John David Booty will most certainly have his redshirt lifted and will likely play this week against Stanford, so reports the LA Times.

It was stated that USC had wanted to preserve Booty’s redshirt year, but that the #9 ranked Trojans decided it was far more important to win now than to plan for the future.

Starting QB Matt Leinart is hurt, and the coaching staff has selected Booty, who graduated from high school this year, a year early, over other QBs with more experience.

Said Coach Pete Carroll...”Right now we’re gonna get ready to try and win games.”

When I saw your headline, I thought you were talking about Chris Phillips!

That's probably a smart move for USC. When you have a chance to have a big year, you sometimes have to gamble the future for the present in an effort to hit the big jackpot. It's the same thing that happens every year in baseball, when a team thinks it has a chance to make a run in the postseason. It gambles away the future by trading top young prospects for seasoned veterans. Again, great decisions to make (sometimes) for teams that have a chance to do something special in a specific season.
