UAB football notes from Wednesday

The SMU football team had several players slowed in the season opener because of the flu and are continuing to the illness as they prepare for Saturday's visit to Legion Field for a Conference USA game against UAB.

The Mustangs won't be the only team at Legion Field fighting the flu bug.

"It hit us a little bit so we have some issues too," said UAB head coach Neil Callaway. "We just have to work through it the best we can."

Callaway said some players have missed practice but he didn't identify those players.

UAB cornerback Brandon Carlisle said he got sick last Friday but he still played in the season-opening win over Rice.

Callaway said the training staff is working on keeping the team as healthy as possible.

"(They're) just trying to educate them on what to do, talk to them about washing their hands and staying away from people who have it," Callaway said.

Carlisle said he's added another step.

"I just go ahead and take medicine and keep it in my body while stuff is going on," Carlisle said.

*Callaway was disappointed with his team's practice session for the second consecutive day. UAB worked out more than two hours in shorts, helmets and shoulder pads on Wednesday morning.

"It was just kind of average," Callaway said. "The 11-on-11 stuff wasn't as crisp as it needed to be. We're just going to keep working at it."

*Count UAB safety Elliott McGaskin as someone who looks forward to seeing SMU coach June Jones at Legion Field on Saturday. McGaskin became a fan of the SMU coach while Jones was turning Hawaii into a respected program.

"I want to meet Coach (Jones)," McGaskin said. "I'll wait until after the game because on the field I don't have no friends on the other side."

So does that mean he has friends at SMU? I'm confused...

Two days of prep left. They have some illness issues as well. I wonder what kind of game it will be.

Oh, and in honor of jtstang and the UAB player in the article above, I don't have no expectations neither!

Maybe he means the other side like when you go to that great, big football field in the sky.

"don't have no friends on the other side". Double negative means he has friends. Or is that just Alabama for you.
