WASHINGTON STATE PREVIEW: Uncharted waters

The SMU football team is headed to Pullman, Wash., to face the Washington State Cougars at 4 p.m. (central time) Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars have a first-year head coach, are expected to break in a new quarterback — or two ... one new starter and a freshman who could come off the bench in relief — and have a defense SMU players and coaches say is much better than the numbers indicated after two home losses to open the season.

But beyond that, what should the Ponies expect to encounter Saturday?

WSU appears to be a lot tougher than we expect and/or the press makes them out to be and am glad that SMU is not overlooking them....and that they are paying attention to the film

Outstanding preview. I agree that it's hard to get a feel for Washington State. They're in a strong conference, so you know some of their struggles came against strong teams like USC, Oregon and Cal (and they've got to go to USC and then to Oregon right after they host us). But it's not like Stanford and Hawaii are USC or Oregon or Cal, and they won pretty convincingly. I'm a little uncomfortable seeing a team as young as ours listed as a road favorite, but this is definitely a game we can win.

PP, you said in another post that you spoke with the WSU beat writer. Did you get his thoughts on the game?

WSU FS Xavier Hicks (#26) went to my high school in SoCal. He was a freshman when I was a senior and played QB, DB and KR/PR. He's an amazing athlete with unbelievable speed. Reminds me that even though they are the dregs of Div. 1 football, they still have BCS caliber talent (generally speaking).

Nah — tried gave them the "feels good to be 2-0, still young, long way to go" pitch.

Same with a radio interview I did up there. Good folks.
