Thank you Kate

Don't worry '94. She didn't ask me out.

I am so happy with the coverage of SMU football by the DMN this year. It is refreshing to actually pull the sports section and see color pictures of SMU players on the front page, plus continued articles about the players and the program. For all you who got so frustrated in the past and canceled your subs to the DMN, you should now reconsider.

Now if Babe can figure out there are other sports in Dallas besides the Cowpokes and if Hansen will retire, we might have some decent sports coverage in the Dallas market.

Pretty sure the quantity of coverage is an editorial decision. But I agree, the quality of Kate's work is much better than those before

I could not agree more.. it was either two years ago or three years ago when Kate started covering SMU at the DMN and I noticed how extensive her coverage was.

I will have to disagree w/ the editorial decision b/c JJaques had the smu beat the last yr or two and coverage was not near as extensive.

thank you kate

Seriously, I understand the coverage was increased by the DMN for the June Jones experiment.

But Kate does do a nice job of reporting.

We dropped football twenty years ago. Not sure what we're doing on Saturdays now, but I do love the 'vard.

You think Kate wrote that SMU should drop football and support UT?

You can't tell Jean Jacques Taylor from Calvin Watkins?

No one wonder the DMN doesn't (usually) give us respect. Our fans are idiots.

OK I'll bite-I don't see any change in SMU coverage or NCAA Football coverage in the PAPER whatsoever-there might be more including the blog. I think every year after one big story somebody claims coverage is improving. I think there is less not more coverage of college football in the Paper. The size of my paper is about 2-3 times smaller and I don't see the extra late week or weekend coverage of college football.

Sorry I will have to totally disagree...the newspaper as a whole is smaller as whose paper isn't nowadays, but we have had numurous SMU color multi-page articles this year that started on the Sports front page and we have even had a front page color article on the Main DMN Front page, so the coverage has been much more than in years past. I didn't like her take on the kick off of the Fall practice article but all in all Kate has been trying to represent SMU in a non-biased way and has something to write almost every day. When I complained earlier about the negative article about JJ she wrote back that she can't be a 'homer' but will try to report in a positive manner.
Please feel free to e-mail her and her staff and complain and/or complement them but the more interest they percieve the more they will pay attention and add more coverage.
All her stuff and the Eddie Selko articles two weeks ago help recruit locals and it helps when others come into Dallas to see that SMU is the home town college on the Sports page.
When we have significant Football and BBall games it will pick up as well, but until then we get what we deserve. Below is what Kate wrote back:

Thanks for sharing your frustrations.

I think today’s article was fair. It’s not my job to be a cheerleader, but the article is clear that June Jones has turned around programs before and will likely do it again. I can’t simply ignore that SMU was 1-11 each of the last two seasons and hasn’t been to a bowl in 25 years. That’s exactly what will make it such a huge story when SMU does turn it around. I picked SMU to go 5-7, a huge improvement. I stated reasons why SMU should be better this year. The Hawaii references were in direct relation to Jones and Co. turning around the Warriors program in their first year there. That didn’t happen here. I hope it does happen in the second year – it will make a great story.

Thanks again for taking the time to write.
