Norm H. talks SMU football

Postby angryfan04 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 12:23 am

Good to hear talk about SMU football on Norm's show on Tuesday. He essentially blamed poor play calling by Jones at the end of the game for the loss.

You mean someone had the nerve to criticize Jones? Wow! I admire your courage for posting that because according to the fans on this board, Jones has never done anything wrong in the two years he has been here.

And yes, I do not subscribe to the Run and Shoot offense. I think it's an absolute gimmick.

I'm begging to believe that myself.

JJ also needs some instruction on decision making.

Tech's offense is a gimmick, too. But you know what? I'd take their record year-in, year-out any day.

JJ will do well here. Everyone makes mistakes... everyone.

Norm is pretty on the level when he speaks.

BLM has to get better at taking care of the ball. DUH.

This is still a very young team. I think we can all agree that they are better than last year and will continue to improve. Keep the faith!

That same decision maker took Hawaii to the Sugar Bowl last year. I give him some considerable latitude to get this program going, and based on some conversations I've had with friends who have seen the team, the improvement is obvious.

Give me a punter and a defense along with a consistent running game and I'm going to win a helluva lot more than I lose. You win week in and week out with brute force. It's that simple.

My opinion of the way the game should be played.

Running it all the time didn't work to well when we watched Keylon Kincaid try to run it up the middle every down. Brute force works when you can recruit the biggest brutes. We can't.

And just to weigh in since I know everyone lives and dies by my football opinions, I'm fine with the play calling. We are a pass-first team, we have to pass and have confidence in doing so, or we might as well ditch the offense. It's the job of the QB to throw it to the open man, or throw it away/run/take a sack.

And yet TCU can recruit that and pretty much impose its will on whoever it plays. And they're pretty much going to clean our clocks on Oct. 3 at Amon Carter. It's going to happen.

And yet TCU uses that style to win CUSA and Mountain West championships, knock off Texas Tech, Oklahoma and play Texas into the fourth quarter. I think TCU's approach to football is far better than ours.

What's really insulting is how good our offensive line is at pass blocking and how poor the line is run blocking. Very sad that a pretty decent unit suffers in that department.

Sounds like the classic Big Ten football philosophy. What a coincidence.

There's so much more involved than the scheme you use. Any scheme can win. JJ's been successful with R&S before and he'll be successful here.
