"...in Nailon's custom Chevy Suburban." Must have been a really grand scholarship. 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Yeah, because you Ponies are so well known for having such a clean program. You've never been in any trouble with the NCAA or had scandals involving the Govenor of Texas. We Frog fans can only hope to achieve your long and consistent level of integrity and honesty.

Kenneth Davis.

"He missed all but the first game of his senior season when he was suspended (along with six teammates) after confessing he received cash payments from boosters, but he finished his college career with an impressive 2,904 yards and 24 touchdowns. He left TCU as the school's second all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns."

I don't know how old you are froggie, but in case you don't know or don't remember, your program had some of the same creative player finacial aid workings at that time as us...you just didn't have a governor to help you out. Just be happy that they targeted us and not you.

Stallion will know this...

TCU hid 2 players...one of whom I think was Eqypt Allen from SOC, in a hotel the night before signing period for fear of SMU out-bidding them for their services.

there were three teammates from SOC one of the others was a LB with a first name Gerald maybe Turner. I'll think of it. But you do know they were hiding them from SMU bagman so TCU wouldn't have to raise their bid. This incident was the trigger that TCU got caught with their own $35-40,000 slush fund. The Dallas Morning News Reported in the morning that NCAA investigators were on the SMU campus interviewing SMU football players concerning TCU violations most likely Rod Jones a former teammate. That's the day that "JIM WACKER DON"T CHEAT" called the team meeting to demand that anyone on the TCU payroll come clean. Kenneth Davis, Allen, Turner and several others were kicked off the team on the Friday before the SMU game. The NCAA was about to lower the boom on TCU when Wacker came clean but guess what-he came clean-TCU moved on. SMU got the Death Penalty for stupidity

I think you might be talking about Gerald Taylor. Wacker made the statement just before they got caught that coaches know when the alums are paying players. Then he got caught and they got one TCU booster to be the sacrificial person for all involved and blamed him.

yeah and Gary Spann was the 3rd South Oak Cliff player-all were down to SMU and TCU and all were considered National Top 100 types or close thereto.
Here's an article about the dismissals.

I never said we were a squeaky clean program, but SMU took cheating to new heights. You made it an artform. Of all the schools in the nation, SMU has the most NCAA recruiting violations, 8. A&M is a close second with 7. TCU has 2.

And they did target us. We got the second worst NCAA penalties in history. 2nd to SMU. We just didn't get the death penalty. Looks like its you that has selective memory.

I'm just marvelling at the hypocrisy of bringing up our transgressions when its SMU that made us look like petty thieves. SMU calling TCU dirty is like Hitler calling Manson a mass murderer.

Just because you guys were not caught as many times does not mean you were not doing it just as much. TCU was doing it during and before F. A. Dry.

for the record 27 schools have been eligible for the dp since smu. alabama was without question the most deserving but since they are a member of the cartel they got away with a slap on the wrist.

your Texas Aggies came pretty damn close. First, they had the Kevin Murray deal("oh my gosh is that my signiture" on that Car Application whereupon he tears document out of George Riba's hands. Second, I remember going to that UT/A&M Game in Austin a few years later with all the Fed EX package and signs: "Hi Jackie! Please Send Money!" A&m was run by the same type of [deleted] that SMU was. They are lucky to have escaped that period without more severe sanctions with guys like Clayton Williams and Bum Bright leading the school.

I think atm primed the pump for payola. What was the story about John David Crow...didnt they fly a cropduster over his Louisiana home and drop $ onto the ole homestead?
