The warning center issued a tsunami warning for a wide area of the southern Pacific after the quake struck at about 6:50 a.m. local time. The quake's magnitude was revised up from the initially announced 7.9.
A 1.6-meter wave was observed in Pago Pago in American Samoa and a 0.7-meter wave in Apia, Samoa, the center said. There were no immediate reports of damage.
The earthquake struck about 200 kilometers south-southwest of Apia, Samoa, and 180 km east-northeast of Hihifo, Tonga, at a depth of 35 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The tsunami warning center said that based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be "destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter."
An investigation is under way to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii, the center said.
