Feature on JJ in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Postby Garret » Wed Sep 30, 2009 10:26 am

"I kind of see it more as 2000 more than '99," Jones said, referencing his second year at UH, when a rebuilt squad struggled to a 3-9 season.

"Right now the guys are buying like they did in '99, but the battle has been like the 2000 season for our first 15 games (at SMU). The kids are hanging in, bought into what we're doing and getting better.

"The department, the kids in the locker room, the attitudes, the equipment guys, the trainers, everybody. That whole culture has been pounded of losing for 25 years, so everybody's got to buy in."

I'll defer to the General. Opening Statements?

I don't know how old this is, but the story making the circles is that should SMU reach the 6-win plateau, the Mustangs are going to Hawaii. Pretty much a done deal.

It says right at the top of the article "Sept 30, 2009"

Please show where any of the coaches say "it's a done deal"
that SMU is going to a bowl this year?

I wasn't referring to the story. I was referring to hubub that I have heard around our campus and what the "insiders" are saying. Take it for what you will.

Calallen has an inside source on the Hawaii bowl selection committee who tells him we're a shoo-in if we reach 6 wins.

Not on the Hawaii Bowl selection committee, but inside our athletic department. We also have to be eligible to be selected (both bowl-eligible, and if we have 6 wins, we cannot be chosen over a 7 win team). If we are able to be selected after the season, just watch how fast that bowl snatches us up.

The phone conversations have already happened.

of course, we are SMU, and we always screw those things up. What was it, the Independence Bowl we were shoo-ins for, and then the New Orleans Bowl?

Like I said, if we are unable to be selected, we won't be selected.

I've talked to several 2nd-hand sources (those persons who have inside sources, whom I trust) who all confirm this. This is a done deal. We hold up our end, and we are Hawaii bound.

If we are going to rely on the information let's get it correct. Its not 6 wins and we are in. As Calallen says we don't get the Hawaii bowl with 6 wins if bowl eligible CUSA teams with 7 wins aren't first accomodated with a CUSA bowl or an independent or at large bowl which might open up. 7 wins and we are in. 6 wins and we might/probably get in. I guess you should hope for a Tulane win against Army this weekend because if Army can slither past Tulane, VMI, NTSU and Temple then Army steals the CUSA's 6th bowl leaving only 5 official CUSA bowls

After the conference championship the Hawaii Bowl has worked a deal that they get second priority and it came be whoever they want s long as the team is bowl eligible. I believe a coach or two even said that we are shooting for 6.

but there is an NCAA rule which overrides any conference bowl argreements. In any Division 1A Conference with bowl affiliations, 7 win teams must be accomodated first before 6 win teams.
