FYI, this is taken at the front shoulder, IIRC.

As the poster above said most Mustangs would be around 14-15 hands and that is measured at the withers. I have seen a domesticated Mustang that was used working cattle. He was a good looking animal, very equable and the owner was very proud of him. Said he was smart, thrifty and very healthy. The animal was very sociable. I really think it would be good to quit using ponies, with all due respect to the Culwells, and have a rider on a real Mustang, on the sideline. A side effect might be, as the SMU football program rises back to prominence, hopefully, that more attention might be directed to the plight of the wild horse herds in the West.

If you wanted a ridden horse as a mascot, then you should have attended Tech.

Here is one of the problems. In every instance where a school mascot involves a rider on a horse it is the rider that is the mascot and focus not the horse. USC - Trojans: Texas Tech - Raiders: Florida State - Seminoles...
If we put a rider on the horse, the rider becomes the focus rather than the animal. What will the rider wear and do. Peruna may be small, but when he runs the field he is the focus not the handlers running with him. That will not be the case with a large horse being ridden by someone.

Just my opinion and just a suggestion. Don't really need any criticism or ungentlemanly remarks from someone who does not even know me or what my contributions to the program have been over the years. PK, those are good points and would be a problem and handlers would have a difficult time leading a Mustang at a gallop on to the field although the people at CU manage with a buffalo which is more intractable than most horses.

I think USC might be the exception. Traveler is da sh$t.

Yeah but the Trojan guy has a sweet sword...

There can only be a rider if they wear a homo-erotic zoro throwback costume complete with shiny cape and black mask. The rider also has to ride around waving the loser L in the air really proudly.
This whole argument is sad. Our mascot kills, screws, and sh*ts all over the competition. TT's horse goes insane and runs into a brick wall, killing itself. UVA's horse bucks and throws the rider off as the team runs out onto the field. Why are we even asking for more trouble on this one.

I must say I do like the breed description:
The Mustang is often called "The Symbol of the American West." Mustangs are known for their rugged athleticism and qualities of endurance.

In the famous 1982 SMU v. Texas Tech game in Lubbock, the Texas Tech mascot also trampled one of our cheerleaders. They don't let that horse do much anymore because there have been problems as you mentioned. I think they still allow it to run in pregame in very controlled circumstances. Right?

Except when the hander is a chick and he's dragging her across the stadium.

Mustangs do not have riders, by definition. We already have a top 10 mascot, Peruna. Our mascot is not the thing that is broke with this program. This is one of the stupidest actions ever taken by an athletic department. Hey, here's a great idea: let's take our one truly enduring 70-yr tradition (lord knows we don't have many) and take a giant steaming dump all over it! If we incorporate another larger mascot, it will be more "intimidating!" Speaking of steamers, Peruna dropped heat on the frog 50-yd line once. You think this new horse is gonna do that. Destroying a college football tradition to distract from how bad your team has sucked is deplorable.

yep, indeed a joke. I predict another awkward, uncomfortable halftime "ceremony" at the Navy game. We are definitely top 25 in awkward, contrived, ill-conceived moments held at Ford Stadium.
