Peruna Is Not the Only Thing That May Change

Last year word was out that JJ wanted to change Peruna because it was associated with a losing culture. The person who told me this said, " and they won't stop there, the band is next."

I asked several folks about this and they all reassured me it was talk and that Turner had no interest in getting "a bigger horse." And we all see what happened then.....

Check out the post from Pony Patrol:

Good point. Continue ignoring the fans 30 and under and this program should really take off. Continue with game presentations that appeal to a 75+ demographic because they're the true die-hard fans. The product on the field is paramount to building a fan base, but it doesn't hurt update traditions to infuse a bit of life into the program. Do you think recruits are impressed by Peruna barking across the field or the sometimes maddening M band interludes that suck the life out of the crowd? I don't get why, to the detriment of the program, we can't upgrade these elements because they're "tradition".

Makes you wonder what is next......

The band does suck. It's pathetic compared to other D-1 school's marching bands. Looks a bit better than my high school's.

Well the money you spent on your SMU education really shows. Let's see very descriptive gutter language and great argument. Yes...very well written.

I wondered if I was the only one who noticed this.

Finally one of the athletic department shills screws up and drops too much info.

While I think the band could use some tweaking, I have zero faith in the ability of SMU to improve something unique. Instead they'll just make a medicore copy of the generic.

With a 2-bit game-day presentation including a poor PA guy, poor PA system, useless video board, and other worthless gimmicks, the Mustang Band is the only thing that has remained consistent in the college gameday experience since WW1. Yeah, let's do away with the band, and get a DJ to do halftime, maybe that takes requests. Brilliant.

Oh, and if you are looking for a D-1 high school band, TCU has been looking like and playing the same high school stuff for years. Oh, but you may not have noticed that since they have a kick-@ss game presentation and football team. Hmm.

The Mustang Band is different that just about any other D-1 school's band, but don't confuse unique musical and marching style with being pathetic. Having said that, there is clearly room for improvement even within their own unique parameters. But they most certainly don't "suck" simply because they aren't carbon copies of every other corps-style, Shako-wearing college band. Does the Aggie Band "suck" because they employ a distinctive military-block style that UT or Tech does not? Does the Rice M.O.B. "suck" because they wear fedora hats and employ satirical comedy in their performances? Perhaps what you're confusing as "suckiness" is your own inability to appreciate different musical styles and genres. Or, maybe you'd just be happier attending your high school's games.

I'm not a big fan of our band but they are ours. That said, better bands are Texas, A&M, and any Big Ten band.

It's kind of like comparing hip-hop, jazz, and country/western. Everyone has their preferences, but if you appreciate music and musicianship, you can acknowledge styles than aren't your personal favorites. I'm not a big military style guy, but I recognize A&M as being one of the best at what they do. And it's pretty hard to argue against Big 10 schools like Michigan, especially if you've even been there when Revelli rolled his bands out at a big home game.

I'm a huge fan of military bands. And when they perform no one leaves. Saw that Saturday. The Big Ten bands have great sound, love their drum core and as far as I'm concerned I love all of their fight songs. A lot of Texas HS bands have borrowed them.

Like everything else, SMU skimps. The band's budget has been the same for decades despite spiraling tuition costs. The band hall is under the natatorium and is a complete DUMP. It's so small the band can't even rehearse there.
However, the students are dedicated and blow louder than bands double their size.
