well its clear your neither a red sox or a cubs fan.... i am a HUGE red sox fan and there is a HUGE difference between the red sox and smu. SMU just sucks. name one year in the last 25 in which SMU had better talent then 7 of their opponents. Red Sox/Cubs have had great teams with the talent to win the world series. you're comparing apples and oranges. also, the red sox and cubs found new ways to lose: buckner, bartman, aaron boone, etc. i could go n but for lack of motivation, SMU has had 1 year that they were even close to making a bowl game, and they were over achieving that year

We were close in '97 (6-5) AND '06 (6-6).

SMU football has stunk for 20 years because it hasn’t spent as much money as its competitors. It has been poorly managed and made bad decisions. The money that was spent was spent poorly. The athletes recruited more often than not did not measure up to the competition. Fundraising lagged. The losses mounted. The number of fans dwindled and nobody seemed to care and those that remained noticed that nobody in charge seemed to care.

Was this supposed to make us feel better? What has changed?

Well, we have paid big bucks for a big name coach and loosened academic standards even more to bring in the type of athlete it takes to compete. There is an impressive campaign going on right now to put butts in seats, a campaign that brought a helluva lot of Dallas out to see Stephen Freakin F Austin. I'd say things have changed considerably, jt.

Maybe I cut and pasted too much of Dooby's blog post. How's this?

This stuff can only be affected by the team's performance on the field, and I am not talking about moral victories here. Now, I ask again, what has changed?

And for the record, I concede the question can only be addressed by reference to the season as it has progressed thus far. I hope things get better as we go along.

What's the question? Fundraising's at a decade-long high. We're 2-2 and 1-0 in conference. Again, we had a record crowd against Stephen F. Austin School for the Blind, and you think Steve Orsini doesn't care? Tell him. He'll listen.

"Fragile..." yeah, I agree with that part...sorry Doob, I couldn't read that long-a$$ piece again...just too brain dead at the moment...but I think you are right about the "fragile" part.

Coach Jones thinks that the team's psyche is fragile...that he needs to remove the losing mentality...the loser culture....

In this case, the fan psyche is fragile...the supporter psyche is fragile...

I've said it 5 times so far, but once more for the record:

The urgent (winning) has become the enemy of the important (sustaining winning).
Fragile is right...
Coach needs to string together as many wins as possible, or he risks killing recruiting, killing the fans' spirit, and killing his own efforts to rebuild this [deleted].

Kinda sucks to think that we won 2 more games that year than we have in the 2.5 years since.

Still trying to figure out what this "record crowd" was. It was a nice turnout. But it was dwarfed by the Texas Tech game a couple of years ago. Now... THAT was a sellout.
