Has anyone noticed that the University of Houston is now 5-1 after the barn-burner last Saturday with Tulane? That equals the Cougars' win total for last year, and Art Briles has accomplished this in his first season as head coach.
My question is this: Why has Briles gotten off to such an impressive start, while Bennett appears to have lost traction and begun a backward slide after his 3-2 finish in 2002? Was the talent Briles inherited much better than the record indicated and, by inference, Dana Dimel was not nearly as good as his success at Wyoming suggested?
On the flip side of the coin, what have been the main causes of SMU's disappointing lack of progress? After all, we are looking at a possible 0-12 season, 2-10 at the realistic best.
I watch SMU athletics from afar here on the Texas Gulf Coast and am interested in the more informed opinions of those of you with a better vantage point.
