Come on now... That would make too much sense! Besides, who really wants to talk football?

NOT ONLY NO! BUT HELL NO!What's the matter with some of you people? Peruna is a MAJOR part of what we do in athletics. We run him across the field after every touchdown.
The dismissiveness and even the indifference by others is really mindboggling and is also reveals they don't have any regard for anything of value.
This is a joke. Our mascot is about to be shown the door within a short period of time and for some it's just like a fart in the wind.

Look, one man, not the student body, not the board, not the football team, made a decision years ago to substitute a shetland pony vs. a mustang. The pony needs to go with along with the image that the school is primarily a school for rich girls, geeks, druggies, drunks and poor football.

For over sixty years, Peruna’s job was to run across the field after every touchdown. In 1996 at the Cotton Bowl in SMU’s first WAC game vs. Tulsa, the WAC Commissioner told SMU athletic officials that it was not legal and to stop before penalties were given. (Due to incidents in other conferences,
the NCAA reviewed guidelines about mascot safety and decided mascots should not be allowed on the field during the time of play.) Since that time, Peruna leads the team onto the field and runs between quarters. All Perunas (past and present) have been hell to control and stories of antics and misbehavior are legion. He kicks, he trips up his handlers, and is generally uncooperative. When he takes off with his two handlers, there is often a question as to who’s running who.

Ummmm......wow. This is going on for almost a week. We do have a rather important conference game this weekend but still we bicker about the fate of a pony. Does anyone here go to see the 10 second long views of Peruna as it runs down the field. People need to either sack up and be there Saturday to root for the Mustangs (the team not the animal) or just stay home and continue to post on here about your long lost love for Peruna

There are many posters on this board who make it very hard to be an SMU fan. They know who they are.

Hillary Swank and Camilla Parker Bowles both have horsey faces. They should be the new mascots

I wonder when it’s all over if they could make Peruna sausages .

Your use of both the caps lock key as well as large sized font has certainly given greater value to your opinion. Additionally, your use of the false dichotomy fallacy (either you agree with me, or you hold nothing of value) goes a long way to proving your point.
Keep up the good work.

if anyone has dug up and read the history of peruna they would see that there was a student asked to introduce peruna to the rest of the school....the biggest problem i have with the now horses is that that is not happening...i have heard this over and over and believe it is true (atleast for me) the biggest difference between college and pros is that there are students who support the team and the spirit they bring is more than anything u will see at any pro game....in my opinion they should be the ones that make these kinds of choices...Yes we are the ones donating to mustang club, buying season tickets, but this is THEIR TEAM...

If the stories of Peruna's rude behavior were truly legion, we wouldn't have this problem. A certain segment doesn't think Peruna is macho enough to be a good mascot. These people need to spend some up-close time around the beast instead of snickering from afar. Peruna will bite yo' [deleted] quicker than Reveille or UGA, but he's always gentle around kids.
As with a lot of things lacking at SMU, this is another case of the school not promoting what it already has. If SMU put a little effort into promoting the fact Peruna is no prancing pony, actually reveled in some of his misdeeds, I think the "We need a large horse" faction would be quieted.
And if Peruna is as uncontrollable as the above quote attests, how the heck are we going to control a full-size horse? Put a rider on a tame Mustang and you've got just another horse. I'll take Peruna leaving his handlers in the dust over that. Long live the Peruna handler face plant!

Sir,
My points were well chronicled on Tuesday. I'm sure we could go down that road if you would like. Now, I'm sure that you have never ever used caps to express yourself over anything and you of course, are above it all. That's fine. Just stick with your philosophy.
Of course, if you want to take this debate a step further, I think you would agree that you were no better altering a quote with blah, blah, blah to prove your point. You're accusing me of being a bit childish. I would suggest that in this glass house, that you refrain from throwing a stone.
You have a nice day.

The Peruna issue is far more important than one game.
The compliance of the shills on this board working for the athletic department I can understand, but even King Sunshine himself IPP is against deficating on nearly the entire history of SMU. It's not even for something awesome, it's for something that the SAME KIND OF PEOPLE complaining about Peruna will just complain about again in a few years.

That's the beauty about this Peruna debate. In a few years the new horses will be gone and forgotten. Mrs. Pickens will move on to other things to occupy her time, June Jones will be counting his money. The current students clamoring for a full-size horse will be long gone, most never to return to campus except for reunions.
Remember "Mighty Mustangs Thunder?" Remember The Noid? I could go on about the various attempts to alter or "add to" SMU's traditions. They all eventually fail or fade away.
