Derrius Bell walks around confused all day. The back of his head is still sensitive to the touch. He awaits the results of an MRI today to see if there is any swelling in the brain.

Bell, a Southern Methodist cornerback, has suffered two concussions already this season. The second one happened against Texas Christian University last week. First play of the game. He made a solid tackle on the play ... and then ... blank.

"After that," he said, "it's all a blur."

Bell isn't a worry-wart. But he can see clearly through the haze that it was time to shut it down. He talked to his parents, team doctors and coaches, and decided that he won't play another down this season. He will petition the NCAA for a redshirt injury waiver, giving him two more seasons of eligibility.

That's really tough news but definitely the right decision. You never want to mess with head injuries for any reason. Here's hoping Derrius makes a full recovery and is better than ever for next season!

Screw next season, I hope he's just okay for life. Bell put it on the line for the ponies, and deserves to have his scholarship honored by Jones, a la M. Rydel's was by Hayden Fry.

No doubt. Whether it's academic or athletic, he deserves a free ride

I agree. In my day we did not recognize concussions. My problem was primarily neck and nerve damage, but after being rendered unconsicous for the umpteenth time one day in spring practice, and taking the rest of the spring and all summer to rehabilitate, I found myself being awaken on the practice field again within the first 10 minutes of 2adays the following season. I was lucky to stop when I did and I trust that Derrius will make the right decision. I will not tell he he should not ever play again but I will say that he already has my respect as a gamer and nothing will change if he hangs it up. And yes, his education should be taken care of.
