Defense rides to rescue for SMU Mustangs

UNIVERSITY PARK – To listen to East Carolina coach Skip Holtz this week, SMU's offense sounds darn near prolific.
That is, of course, the common perception of coach June Jones' Run and Shoot and the big passing numbers it produces. It feeds right into the idea that Conference USA's West Division teams are wide-open offensive units, while East Division teams such as ECU are more defensive minded.
And, as the defending league champion visits the Hilltop at 7 p.m. today, there's something to all that.
But for the Mustangs this season, it's been the defense that has kept them in games.
