Rutledge Named to Mid-Season All-America Team

Postby Webmaster » Wed Oct 15, 2003 3:11 pm

SMU's Jonas Rutledge was named to the offensive team of the CollegeFootballNews.com mid-season All-America offensive and defensive teams, as announced Wednesday by the publication. Rutledge, one of the nation's top kickoff returners, was named to the offensive team. Rutledge along with Nevada's Jorge Cordova (who was named to the team as a defensive lineman) are the only representatives from the WAC.

Rutledge is sixth in the country in kickoff return yardage to lead the Mustangs whose return team is ranked No. 1 in the nation. Rutledge has 14 kickoff returns this season for a total of 445 yards, an average of 31.8 yards per return.

Cordova leads the nation in sacks, with 10 in his first six games this season. He has 18.5 over his last 12 games. Cordova was just named the Bronko Nagurski-FWAA National Defensive Player of the Week, for his four and half-sack performance against Washington. The senior owns Nevada's career record for sacks with 28 for 180 yards lost.

Texas Tech and SMU are the only two Texas schools reprsented on those two lists. That's two good reasons for Stallion to be happy.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
