A year ago, Rock Dennis resembled a smaller-scale version of the Mustangs: coming back after a long layoff (in his case, from a broken shoulder blade in 2007), and while he showed flashes, he also battled inconsistency, including several dropped interceptions.
This year, the Mustangs are better, thanks in large part to a much-improved defense, and Dennis is a major reason why the defense is playing at a higher level. The senior strong safety has a team-high four interceptions — including one he returned for a touchdown in last week's win over defending C-USA champion East Carolina — for an SMU defense that leads the entire nation with 13 picks.
Dennis sat down this week with PonyFans.com to discuss why the defense is improved and why he is improved — including a nod of gratitude to his mother — and how the Mustangs and head coach June Jones are changing the culture around the SMU program.
