If we join CUSA what will our non conference games be?
The TCUseless game will be a conference game, so how quickly can we get 3-4 quality teams on the schedule?

I would think we would try to keep whatever commitments we have with Tech, OSU and Baylor, and just try to add another crowd drawing opponent in place of TCU.

I see little problem. We would just have 1 OOC game to replace. BTW-Do we want all of our OOC games to be against tough opponents? I would like to see 2 or 3 against tough ones but at least one (preferrably the first) against someone on par with us now. There is no reason to get our brains beat out every year before we get to conference. We need a couple at least to measure progress and to help with RPI should we get better.

SMU might continue to play UTEP or La Tech from the WAC. AND don't forget that we have an alliance pending with Army & Navy that will quite likely fill the private school schedules in the
C-USA West.

I thought we were trying to get out of the rest of the OSU deal. Is that not the case?

I have heard rumors that the Miami Hurricanes have some interest for recruiting reasons to make an appearance in Dallas.

Navy always makes for a nice series.

I would think there are alot of college programs that would like to showcase their program in a recruiting hot-bed like Dallas.

If we improve just a tad, SMU will not have any trouble attracting non-confernce series opponents.

I would try and keep UTEP on the schedule. They travel well and they are a team that is going to be getting screwed in this reorganization. Why would we want out of the OSU deal? They travel real well.

i agree - why would we want out of the okie state deal?

we need the competition as long as we're not in the bcs-bs & they're good!

Bennett has stated that part of his "deal" with Copeland when he took the job was that we would try to schedule at least 2 games every year with Big XII teams. Expect to see continuing series with Baylor, TTech, Okie St, Kansas, etc... and perhaps someday a game with A$M or KState because of Bennett's relationships with those schools.

It's going to be interesting how the Army/Navy "associate" member scheduling factors into all of this. I wouldn't rule out future games with UNT, either.

Bottom line is that we have a 32k seat stadium and need to average 15k butts in seats to remain I-A eligible. Games with Houston, Tulsa, Rice and Tulane have not drawn well when any of the teams were having down years. I wouldn't expect any of the CUSA east teams to be a big draw in Dallas, so those Big XII games will remain critical to our I-A survival until we put a better product on the field. If we start competing in CUSA by 2005, that's just about the time we should become competitive again.

Agreed, CP, well put.

I thought it was OSU who was trying to back out of the series, not us. Am I making this up?

Why would Okie St want to get out of a home and home series like SMU.

We drew 21k against UTEP, which didn't bring many fans at 0-4, while we were were 0-4 as well (i.e., SMU-ites were already pulling away).

The Truth is we drew at most 10,000 real SMU fans, somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 UTEP fans, substantial numbers of mommies and Daddies for parent weekend and about 8,000 essentially given away tickets for which I applaud and commend the Promotion Department for saving us further humiliation from the stark reality of apathy-but the SMU fan base is at a horrifically low, embarrassing level right now because the alumni are sick and tired of the excuses from this university and its failure to compete in Division 1A.
