That team was very advanced. They are running a variation of the "Wild <insert name of school mascot>" formation.

For a good overview of how American college football has evolved from its origins as a rugby-style game to its current form (including societal pressures to change rules, etc.), this book is a good read.

That does not look all that much different than the DVD that I have of the 1969 Texas-Arkansas game. When you are my age that does not seem all that ancient.
