Non-AQ picks, Week 8

Posted by ESPN.com’s Graham Watson

Houston 51, SMU 30: This is a key matchup in the race for Conference USA West. SMU is undefeated with big wins over East opponents East Carolina and UAB, but playing against West teams is a different story. Since few of them are recognized for their defense, these games are usually a shootout. Houston has consistently been dynamic on offense and should be able to put up similarly gaudy numbers against an SMU defense that’s one of the worst in the country.

Aren't we almost leading the nation in takeaways this year?

Whatever. Our D is ranked something like 93rd in yardage and is tied for #2 in picks. Not great, but hardly one of the worst in the country.

Maybe this guy is just a little slow. We were ranked next to last in 2008.

If I'm not mistaken, the author is a woman. Normally, she's very good, but this assessment is way off-base.

Graham Watson makes at least one "WTF?" statement every week.

Rachel Ray she's not.

Although "half baked" might be a better description.

SMU's defense is ranked higher than Houston's in 9 of the 14 categories listed on http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2009&div=IA&site=org

Houston is #115 in rushing d, #111 in total d, #120 (literally last) in tackles for a loss, #119 in 1st down d, #112 in 3rd down conversion d.

But they're also 4-1. He might have meant that their vaunted passing attack might make us LOOK like one of the worst defenses in the country. Maybe.

UH has the #1 total offense team in the nation against our #92 total defense team. Not a good combination. OUr offense is #71 against UH's #111 defense. Basically, if our offense can score it will be a high scoring game. If our defense can get some turnovers we have a chance.
