Standing Back and Taking a Look

Postby Topper » Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:31 pm

Take away:

Turnovers
Dropped passes
Special teams lapses
Stupid penalties

We were even with UH in total yards. Defense actually stifled their Heisman candidate passer.

I think we are matching up physically with people better than we have in several years. And the team has improved drastically since the SFA opener. We may not have a winning season, but at this point in time I see things going in the right direction.

Look better than our record

Postby Sam I Am » Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:55 pm

Our win over SFA may be better than we thought since the Lumberjacks have won all the rest of their games since then. Our loss to UH was not necessarily to a better team, whereas TCU was better than us for sure. Granted losing two overtimes is telling, but our offense has kept us in all the games except TCU. I actually liked the way the defense played the Coogs. I do think that the QB situation has been the limiting factor, although I am not a Mitchell hater. No wonder the poor guy has ulcers, too much pressure to lead SMU out of the wilderness when no one else has done it yet. Frankly, I don't want a 6-6 team going to a bowl game, but I can't see anyway for us to win out. Maybe we can beat UTEP, Tulane and Rice at home. Winning on the road at Tulsa and Mashall is a reach. Overall, SMU is better this year. We still have farther to go to become a good team. We've waited for 20 years. Guess we'll have to wait some more.

I feel bad that so much criticism has been leveled at BLM. I am not sure that he is he one to lead this team to the promised land, but no one says the young man doesnt work hard or that he isn't trying.

I see this year's team going 5-7 or 6-6. If we had played error free ball last Saturday night, and if the speical teams had performed a little better, we might have knocked off a top 25 team. I will not be popular for saying this, but we didn't match up well against TCU because TCU is a heckuva good team. For the last 20 years they have been recruiting a lot of the talent that we would have been recruting back in the 70s and 80s. It was no huge embarrassment to lose to them the way we did. I felt that even though we are not as good as TCU, we are getting closer to their talent level than we have been in years, and we definitely belong on the same field that they play on.

I believe that is a light at the end of the tunnel I see....

Having said that JJ still has a way to go, but it is getting better. It starts with recruiting, recruiting, recruiting! JJ now has kids who are considering SMU who would not have given us the time of day a couple of years ago. We have the coaching in place, even though I am still not a fan the run and shoot style of offense, but it is what it is. I think TCU, Boise State, are the type of programs we should aim to be and then aim higher and I think in a few more years we will be there.

This program CAN BE AND WILL BE THE CLASS OF CONFERENCE USA . Then who knows what happens after that.

Amen. Recruiting is the key. Let's beat TCU at recruiting talent within 100 miles of DFW and we are a top ten team again.

Had we won the WSU game we would be sitting pretty now. However, I am encouraged about the future and especially about this season.

Yep. WSU game may be back breaker for us.

WSU plays N.Dame down here this weekend in Alamodome and already reporters are talking about how bad WSU is and that it will be a scrimmage / easy victory for N.Dame. Should have won that one.
