SMU head coach June Jones said Monday that if injured quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell can't play Saturday at Tulsa, he is "leaning" toward starting true freshman Kyle Padron.
However, he was quick to emphasize that no decision has been made. Mitchell will have X-rays and an MRI this afternoon on his left (non-throwing) shoulder, which he dislocated Saturday at Houston. Mitchell said Monday that the pain has gone down considerably in the last 24 hours, adding that he could "barely lift my arm" Sunday.
Jones said that even if Mitchell can't play, he is not yet locked in on playing Padron. Jones said he is inclined to play the freshman from Southlake, but could change his mind and go with redshirt freshman Braden Smith. Any decision, Jones said, would come only after the results from Mitchell's tests Monday afternoon.
Mitchell said that when the injury occurred Saturday, "I thought I'd broken my collarbone." However, he said that if the X-rays and MRI don't reveal any damage to the shoulder, his pain has gone down to the point that he hopes to be back on the practice field Tuesday or Wednesday.

sounds like he knows Padron will start but he doesnt want Tulsa to spend all week coming up with blitz packages just for the freshman that havent been shown so far this year on film

I don't know. You have to assume Tulsa will be planning some new kind of a blitz package, just in case Mitchell can't play, and maybe I misread it, but Mitchell sounded pretty optimistic about being able to play if his X-ray and MRI don't show any structural damage.

If this season turns into the latest edition of the SMU Freshman QB Carousal, then we're done. Stallion once made the point that, with the exception of a few uber-blue chip types, freshman or sophomore QBs typically struggle. If this team is going to really turn the corner next season, we are going to need an experienced junior or senior QB to lead us. Unless we pick up a JUCO QB in the off-season, that means BLM. So I really hope he can go this week and continue playing and gaining experience this season. Likewise for Padron. I think the best thing that can happen for that kid is to not see the field again until at least next year.

Please, let us pick up a JUCO QB in the off-season.

We definitely should not play him and forfeit our entire season by doing so. That would defeat the stated goal of making it to a bowl game this year.

What's with the fascination with JJ McDermott? He's a transfer from NEW MEXICO STATE. He may be a diamond in the rough, but not many diamonds are recruited to New Mexico State. I don't care if Hal Mumme was the one doing the recruiting or not.
And there are high schools besides Katy that produce college quarterbacks.

Has to sit this season per NCAA transfer rules.

Yeah I knew he had to sit out, I merely asking about the possibility of him starting next year? Apparently, PF's are not too keen to that idea.

I misunderstood. I think the QB situation next year is probably going to be completely up in the air.

Spring ball will be a tough time for many PonyFans. I highly doubt the coaches announce a QB pecking order ... heading into camp, or even after the Red/Blue Game.

Unless somebody establishes themselves this year, competition next spring is a good thing. I don't think anyone deserves that title based on performance thus far.
