KYLE PADRON: Mystery man

SMU head coach June Jones said this week that if starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell can't play Saturday afternoon at Tulsa after injuring his shoulder last week, true freshman Kyle Padron will get the start under center — or in the shotgun — for the Ponies.

Padron got his feet wet last week against the Cougars, rotating in and out of the game with redshirt freshman Braden Smith, and fared well, completing nearly 69 percent of his throws and throwing his first touchdown pass.

But to many, Padron remains a relative unknown. He has about half a game of experience in college, and played just five games as a senior at Carroll High School in Southlake (after filling in for less than one game as a junior) before an injury to his throwing hand ended his high school career prematurely.

Padron, quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison and a couple of teammates — including walk-on wide receiver Ryan Walker, who rooms with Padron at SMU and played with him at Carroll — visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the freshman passer's physical tools and intangibles, and how his presence on the field will affect the SMU offense. Whether it's this weekend or in the future, how will the offense change with Padron running the show?

actually Padron played in parts of 2 games as a Junior which can't be described as "mop-up". They were huge games

First, he came in against eventual National Champ Miami Northwestern in that TV game. Riley Dodge got hurt with SLC driving. Padron threw an Int in the end zone and Dodge soon returned(btw Miami QB Jacory Harris was the QB for Northwestern in that game). Dodge came back in but SLC ended up losing that game breaking their 49 game winning streak

Then Riley Dodge got hurt again in the Playoffs against Abilene in the first half. Padron almost lead them to victory but had a crucial fumble on last minute drive at about the 10 yard line. That loss broke SLC's unblemished Texas winng streak of 59 games against Texas teams.

Anyway he did play in some key parts of big games as a Junior

Fair enough. When interviewing him, he said he got into just the one game — the playoff game — and "mop-up duty" was his term.

Really good story, guys.
Hope Mitchell is healthy, of course, but if the situation dictates that Padron gets in the game, I'm eager to see what he can do.

Anyone know if a decision on the starting QB has been made? Is it a game-DAY decision, or a game-TIME decision?

No indeed. Whether Mitchell plays on Saturday, or whether KP takes over, we have a pretty nice situation at QB. Now let's go and beat Rice.
