Starter says he'll miss Rice game
Posted: Mon Nov 02, 2009 11:29 amSMU right guard Bryce Tennison said Monday he expects to sit out Saturday's game against Rice because of an abdominal strain. When he left the Tulsa game, he was replaced by sophomore Kelly Turner.
Tennison said the injury "might" have occurred during the Houston game a week earlier.
"I was on anti-inflammatories for my shoulder, so it might have happened (against Houston)," Tennison said.
Injuries affect players at each position differently, of course. For an offensive lineman, an abdominal strain can be particularly painful when a defensive lineman tries to get under the blocker's pads while trying to get into the backfield.
"You're talking about my core — it's pretty important," Tennison said. "You can really (feel it) when you're firming up against a defensive lineman."
Tennison said head coach June Jones had personal experience with a similar injury, and suggested taking the week off.
"Coach Jones and I talked about it, and it's something he has dealt with, personally," Tennison said. "He said it's something you really don't want to aggravate, so he wants me to sit out one game. I really don't want to sit on the bench — ever — but he said he wants me to be strong down the stretch, and so do I.
"I hate to sit out, but I think it's the right thing."
