For those that doubt the SMU to Hawaii bowl "done deal," Just take a looksie at the basketball schedule.
One other note. If SMU earns a bowl berth, one of the most likely bowls it would go to is the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24. How much would bowl organizers like to get June Jones back to the islands? Well, when the new Diamond Head Basketball Classic was created, at least the thought was already somewhere in the minds of the planners -- who booked the SMU men's basketball team for the Dec. 22, 23 and 25th tourney.
David A.K. Matlin is the executive director of the Hawaii bowl and he's also in charge of the basketball tournament. He admitted he had the thought the SMU football and basketball teams could be in Hawaii at the same time if the planets aligned...
http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com ... notes.htmlThat is right. The friggin' basketball team already has their tickets.

Awesome! If everything plays out as planned, then all of us who have been waiting for this moment for the last 25 years wil be able to enjoy it all from 7500 miles away via television. Just the way I dreamed it would be! With all those long year the Hawaiians have lived and died on SMU football, this is the right answer.

I had felt the same way as you about this, but on another thread someone mentioned how great it would be for the players to get to go to Hawaii so I have changed my mind a little bit. While I am hoping that if we make a bowl it is one I can go to (and I am not sure I can make it to Hawaii), the fact is that it is not about the long suffering fans it is about the players who do the work to get to the bowl. If they prefer Hawaii then I completely understand.

Wuba, I don't disagree, and I know that the team would get a lot of crowd support from the locals since they're June's guys, but it is still kinda hard to swallow. I'd love to go, too, but I don't think I want to throw down $3-4K for the bowl experience. At least we will be able to say that we've reached the corner as a program finally.

Hawaii Bowl is all well and good, however, we damn sure better not [deleted] away the Liberty Bowl if we somehow win the Conference Championship, yes not likely...but certainly possible.
I would come unglued if we settled for the Hawaii Bowl so June could wear his Flowery shirts and hang out with his burned out cowboy singin buddies. Even though officially The LIberty Bowl does not have to take the champion, they always have, and we better not be working any side deals to put us there regardless....

Yeah, that definitely wouldn't be a Top 25 decision.

Even if we are Conference champs, the Liberty Bowl doesn't have to take us. They just have the first choice of CUSA. They might choose any bowl eligible CUSA team. Remember, we don't have a huge fan base, we have lousy home attendance and we don't travel well according to some sources. So, we might win the championship and the Liberty Bowl picks perhaps UH.

That isn't true. The Liberty Bowl is contractually obligated to invite the Conference Champ.

"Settle" for the Hawaii Bowl? The opportunity to watch our basketball and football teams both play in the same week plus spend Christmas in Hawaii is a no brainer to me.
Mele Kalikimaka, y'all!

That would be the standard SMU Admininstration Cop Out....while they are not obligated to take the winner, they always have and would certainly take us unless we start belly [deleted] and working back room deals so we can go to an inferior bowl half way round the world just cuz your coach wants to.
Probably no need to get worked up about this...but if we do win the championship and still end up in Hawaii, you can bet it was because we made it happen and they will lie to us about it.

Unbelievable! After 25 years since the last bowl game and among the worst teams in the country for most of those years.......and now some fans are complaining about what bowl we may go to after winning four games. Again, Unbelievable. The coaches/players and their families deserve the best they can achieve. So many SMU fans still don't get it. Most fans of teams would be overjoyed to have this oppotunity. Let's see Hawaii or Fort Worth, Hawaii or Houston, Hawaii or Shreveport. Since the team has received so little support except from a few loyal fans, I would not have the fan's wishes at the top of my wish list when picking a bowl. Let them get on board and show the support and that they will travel well and then let's talk about where we as fans would like to go. TEAM FIRST, me second!

$4000? How many people are you intending on taking? RT airfare is around $700.
