The Model

At the risk of being condemned to ever lasting damnation in hell by the SMU God Squad by making a factual post on Ponyfans-here is an analysis of how changes in the Model have resulted in tangible better results on the field:

McNeil:
Leading Rusher
Leader Total Yards from Scrimmage
Leading Scorer(from scrimmage)

Kennemer:
Leading Tackler
Leader Tackles for Loss

Frazier:
Leading Sacks
Leading Tackler on Defensive Line
Leading Tackles for Loss on Defensive Line

Dennis:
Leading Interceptor
Leading Turnovers recovered

Sterling Moore:
Leader Passes Broken Up

Syzmanski:
Leading Scorer on Team-all punting, kicking and KO.

Team: Half of all turnovers on team from this group. Is there a Defensive Stat not included? Perhaps kicks blocked by the Euro.

and this doesn't even include low minimum qualifiers under NCAA admission standards which are sometimes hard to identify. Needless to say when a handful of recruits don't qualify there are probably a bunch.

I don't think people can disagree with that.

But people can believe if June wasn't hired these changes wouldn't have been made.
If we would have hired another alleged "up and coming" coach, he would have failed
under the old recruiting rules.

Hope we can keep getting more players in like the above.

1 out of 3 isn't bad...we just don't agree that your opinions are all facts or more importantly that you exclusively were in possession of the facts.

Were Kennemer and Dennis brought in by JJ or did they come during PB?

That is my belief. We finally went from finding someone who wanted the job to hiring someone we wanted to have the job. And to get the job, I am certain that Jones had stipulations that had to be met. It has long been obvious that the DP has not punished us for over 20 years. We have punished ourselves for the last 15. If Alabama for instance were to get the DP, they would be back in the top 10 within 5 years of returning.

Both were PB guys. Kennemer isn't good evidence of a model change b/c he could have been accepted at any point, post-DP. He was accepted by Harvard out of high school and was either an honor roll student at A&M where he was a walk-on, not a highly recruited player. Franchione's first DC loved him but the second didn't think he could play & wouldn't consider him for playing time.

So is Dennis an example of new or old model?

Contrary to Bennett's rambling press conference, the model that is in place was put in place prior to June Jones' arrival.

The transfer issue was a school-wide policy change, as discussed ad nauseum, on a certain SMU Football Blog (what ever happened to that guy?). It was changed prior to Bennett's leaving.

Beyond that, it is still unclear how much things have even changed. However, there is some evidence that there are players receiving offers that never would have before.

I will say this. With the exception of a possible transfer or two, there isn't one kid on that Rice team that beat SMU the last three years that could not have gotten into SMU. The same goes for Tulsa. The AD's office looked at it; the board of trustees looked at it. It is true. They did a study. They knew the results. That is why things are the way they are today. Do you really think SMU was going to change a policy without seriously doing the research to prove a change was or wasn't necessary? The fact is that, by and large, SMU got beat by kids that could have gone to SMU, but chose not to.

The suggestion that Bennett was incapable of getting it done because of the "model" is one that Bennett himself was more than willing perpetuate, reaching its peak in his firing press conference. However, like everything Bennett ever said, there were some elements of truth to it, but it was mostly a lot of BS.

Now, did the model contribute to losing? Of course. Did the ridiculous transfer rules make it impossible to get juco's or I-A or I-AA transfers? Yes. Was the original Pye model a disaster? Yes. But those things also created a culture of losing that kept some coaches away and some recruits away as well, and eventually the fans, too.

And that is why we pay June Jones $2M a year.

Wasn't that the story we were fed about Dillard, that he couldn't get in to SMU, but got in to Rice?

Yeah, Bennett suggested that. Of course, I am not sure if Bennett knew about the article in the Chronicle where Dillard was quoted as saying he was invited to walk on at SMU. Dillard also had a basketball offer from Colgate.

You take those two facts and decide if you think Dillard could have gotten into SMU.

hey dooby....great post btw....
Stallion seems to think he's the only one that realized a team of Einstein's probably wont go 12-0

but dooby we hear we are on a level playing field now
i know things have changed for the better
but we're really no where near a level playing field are we?

because don't the kids we let in now but didnt used to...still have to pass SMU courses?
and doesn't SMU not yet offer Basket Weaving 101?

so a kid may get offered by Houston & SMU...but the kid may realize he can't "hide" at SMU in some Mobile Home Trailer Park Management class at SMU....
