UNIVERSITY PARK -- SMU quarterback Richard Bartel, benched during Saturday's 45-3 loss to Boise State, will transfer from the school. He will be replaced at starter by highly touted freshman Chris Phillips, who has yet to take a snap this season.
Phillips, a Bishop Lynch product, picked SMU over Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and Kansas State. Rivals100.com, a recruiting service, ranked Phillips as the 28th-best quarterback in the nation his senior year of high school.
SMU started Bartel until the Nevada game on Sept. 27, when Tate Wallis became the starter.
SMU coach Phil Bennett went back to Bartel after a weak effort from Wallis. SMU ranks last among 117 Division I-A teams in total offense and 106th in passing.
Bennett said he would help Bartel find a new school.
SMU is 0-7, one of three winless Division I-A schools.
