Rice is Confident

From the Houston Chronicle:

After the open week, Rice's Cheta Ozougwu was looking ahead to Saturday's game at SMU, and the junior defensive end casually tossed out what usually would be interpreted as harmless smack or bulletin board material Monday.

“I haven't lost to SMU since I've been here and I don't intend to now,” he said.

His coach's normal reaction might have been to cringe or question why Ozougwu or any member of the winless Owls (0-8, 0-4 Conference USA) would have the audacity to utter such a statement.

Instead, the comment merely fortifies David Bailiff's assertion that his team needs to believe in itself in order to end this slide.

“We have to get these young men playing confident,” Bailiff said Monday.

The article also says that Rice conducted 3 extra practices during the off week to prepare for SMU's offense.

This is the point every year where I am reminded that I know people that have know Bailiff personally dating back to his TCU days, and the uniform opinion is that his wife is nice but he an idiot. This is from the wife of a Rice grad the day after he was hired.

Shawnbrey will have a big day, and I think whomever is throwing the ball will also have a huge day. They may back of the line to cover our wrs an then we bust em with shanbrey. Man it's nice to have a legit running threat.

Sounds like good plan. (EDIT -- two posts ago by Georgia)

I don't think our coaches will let the players even think they have this game.

Tulsa thought they had us at home on their homecoming -- didn't work out for them.

Need the win. A decisive one would be better. And no injuries.

The confidence that Rice players have when playing us is a real boast for Rice. NOthing enables success like confidence. All those blown leads over the last few years are now a barrier. It is important for us to get ahead and keep pressure on.

This is a dangerous game as we are talking bowl and they are talking with confident smack.

Focus, finish each play and eliminate silly mistakes, turnovers and penalties and we beat Rice.

If he was really feeling confident, he would not feel the need to say anything about beating a team that had only won 2 games since 2006 entering the season. Sounds more like desperation to me. Let's kick him while he's down--and then have Peruna trample him.
