I don't think U of Hawaii fans like SMU

I just mentioned this in another thread, but I decided to make my own thread because I think it is an interesting issue. I just got back from Hawaii (Maui) on Monday. While I was there, on several occasions, I brought up the SMU/June Jones thing with some of the locals (shop owners, waiters, bartenders). The reaction was always the same. We would be engaged in a decent conversation about the Saints or LSU or U of Hawaii and when the conversation turned to SMU, it all of a sudden dead-ended and turned cold. No one ever had anything good to say about SMU. About the only lukewarm thing I got was that JJ was a great coach who really identified with the Hawaiian people. I never would have expected such a bad reaction.
I actually think we might be persona non grata over there and could be the team most of the people in attendance root against at the Hawaii bowl. Seriously. Maybe some of the Hawaii people who visit this board could comment...

Not sure why they would have anything against SMU. Blame their own school for that screw up.

That is kind of like saying you shouldn't have anything against your ex's new boyfriend because he is probably better for her than you, isn't it?

Have to love the guy that came on here Jan 8, 2008 and said we were so dumb for taking JJ . And thanked us because now they have McMackin and he will take them farther than JJ ever did. lol

For some reason this reminds me of "My Secret Girlfriend", its a lame show, but I can't seem to turn it off.

I've wondered about that too. Sure, it'll be great for Jones.
But is it best for SMU?
I think the more accurate metaphor might be: it's like a guy (Jones) taking his new wife (SMU) out to visit his ex's family (Hawaii), because he's just dying to see them again.

I wouldn't be too happy with SMU either if the roles were reversed.
Non-issue and not a big deal. He's here now, get over it.

I was over there this summer and wore SMU gear quite a bit. I actually thought I'd get a little more of a reaction. The folks who did approach me and said something were all nice about it. They of course were upset about losing him, but didn't show any ill will against SMU -- actually wished us a lot of luck and said we got a good one with JJ.
Who knows, maybe now that the season is underway and Hawaii is struggling, they've now become more bitter towards June's new sugar mama.

I don't know what you mean by "non-issue." But for this board, I personally think it IS an interesting and relevant issue simply because of all of the people on this board who have proclaimed how neat-o it would be if we were in the Hawaii Bowl because we would be the toast of the town or something. I don't know what facts and experiences those who think the Hawaii Bowl would be ideal, or that we will be celebrated, have, but my personal experience there makes me think it may not be such a great welcoming by the majority of those attending the Hawaii Bowl.
