8 minutes left in the game we have the ball first and 10, up 31-20. I turn to my friend and say watch this, we will throw a 30 to 40 yard fly route whether the receiver is open or not. Then, on 2nd and 10 we will run the fullback dive for about a yard or two to make sure we run a little clock anyway. Sure enough, thats what occurred. I am not much for calling plays or predicting things. I don't even participate in the weekly score prediction threads. Well, Rice was not fooled at all on the fly route. The play had no chance, just like they knew it was coming.

I am all for going for the jugular, but JJ is too predictable and all we needed in that situation was a bit a ball control with a mix of 6-10 yard passing routes. Instead, sure enough, we gave Rice a legit chance to rip our hearts out at the end of the game. Good thing Haynes snatched that onside kick.

I am sorry. Are you talking about the same coach on the verge of taking us to a bowl game for the first time since you had pimples and braces?

glad for JJ. glad for Padron. Glad JJ is going with Padron. Like the way things are going. Don't really think we are learning to close out games though and I think JJs decisions are a big part of it. We aren't bowl eligible yet either.

Rice outplayed us. WE barely beat winless Rice. I know a win is a win but we have problems that need to be fixed before UTEP. What was up with McJunkin?? Worst Officiating I have ever seen.

JJ has always been predictable. He doesn't bring the element of surprise; it's a function of execution -- and with a half-assed offensive line tonight it was tough to execute. Glad to sneak out with the win as I knew Rice would be tough.

This is true. JJ is predictable even at Hawaii. Like he says. We pass the ball. That is what we do. So expect to see JJ pass because that is what the offense is all about.

Rice was a winnable game. 16 point favorite to beat Rice. Play your base offense and challenge the Rice defense to out play your offense. Why show something different so UTEP, Marshall, and Tulane can pick up on it? All we need to do is win by one point. So get used to these close games and these questionable calls.

We won with the defense knowing what we were going to do. No trickeration or out coaching. Just plain old beat us at what we do best.

The dangerous part is trying to defend the R&S when JJ decides to not play the basic offense. How do you prep for that if you never saw it before?

The beauty of the R&S is that nobody knows where the QB is going to throw the ball. Even the QB does not know before the play where he is going to throw the ball. It all depends on what the defense is going to do that dictates where the QB throws the ball. The QB does not throw the ball to a particular reciever in the typical sense. The QB throws to a place on the field where the receiver is supposed to run too. In time with an experienced QB and receivers, you will see the QB throw the ball before the receiver even breaks to the ball. This is the beauty of the R&S and why JJ has so much faith in his offense. It is unstoppable when done correctly.

That is why I key on the offensive line first. The R&S success depends on an experienced OL. The OL needs to give the QB at least 3.5 to 4 seconds so the QB can go thru his progressions to find the open receiver. The seasons that Hawaii has had great success is when the R&S has had an experienced OL which minimized the amount of QB sacks for the season.

Enright was the only senior OL and the center which is the key to the SMU OL. He probably called the OL assignments too. The center is the key to the OL in the R&S. I suspect when sophomore McJunkin took his place there was a big drop off on the OL as a whole. If McJunkin had junior or senior guards backing him at the OL, it would have negated his inexperience.

A win is a win. This is a very young team.

Look. For some reason, The Rice game over the last couple of years has always been difficult. In one way or another one team has played spoiler to the other. Let's be happy with the win and hope for a lot of improvement before the Utep game next week.
