Does anyone know?

This was probably discussed in the game thread, but why were we not penalized on the 2nd half kickoff for the celebration penalty called on the returned fg? The officials said it would be assessed on then but it was not. That was a big break.

Couldn't figure it out either. Are the refs so stupid they forgot? And Bailiff, too? Bailiff didn't act out of the ordinary.

Now if Baliff says anything it will probably cost him $30,000.

Is it possible that since time had expired in the half, it could not have been a penalty? That is all I can come up with. But then again, the extra point was still pending.

they said you cannot be penalized starting the half with a penalty from the last half.

it was suggested that the SMU coaching staff told the refs about it to start the half.

bottom line sounded like the refs dropped the ball on that one.

They announced that it would be on the 2nd half kickoff and I remember in the UTEP game 2 years ago we got a penalty on the last play of the half (I think it was on Bennett for yelling at the refs) and kicked off from the 15 and it set them up to come back and beat us in overtime.

Or maybe UTEP kicked off from the 45 and recovered an onside kick. Whichever it was not a good thing.

Hmmmmm....Rice return man fielded the second half kickoff at the 15 yd line and returned it to their 35 yd line< Symanaski must have kicked it short because I was thinking without the 15 yd PF penalty, Rice would have been starting at their 20 yd line instead of the 35 yd line

The one and only theory I can come up with is that Rice had a 15-yard infraction of their own in the meantime, putting the ball right back at the 30. Maybe they said something unsportsmanlike as they ran off the field.

Or the officials really did just "space it."

My understanding is that unsportsmanlike penalties cannot be carried over the half. Instead of pushing back the PAT, the Rice coaches asked for the penalty to be carried over. However, te quality of these refs shone through again, and they did not realize until half that what they had "agreed" to was in fact illegal (much like taking 5+ minutes to realize that the ES "holding" penalty and the dead ball personal foul were not offsetting.)

Yeah, you can't carry the fouls over. They talked about it on the play by play on the Ticket. Refs effed up.
