Worst officiating I have seen in a long time

Postby Billy Joe » Sun Nov 08, 2009 2:16 pm

SMU 13 - 122 / Rice 4-38. Everytime we would gain momentum with a big play the refs called a penalty. The pass interference call was an obvious attempt to try and let Rice score. The non-pass interference on our pass play again was horrible. I believe the holding call on ES on Mcneal's big run was a bunch of crap. I understand each team will get some calls and have some calls go against them. I understand the officials will miss calls and make bad calls - I get all of that - I just found it hard to watch an officiating crew be so blatanly obvious with calls to try and help the other team win. Wow - Rice, a winless team, only committed 4 penalties in the whole game and we commit 13. I wish bad and horrible things on that officiating crew. If I am wrong about this then please let me know.

I have to disagree. They were the worst officials since our the Navy game, which was the worst since ECU. The officials at home games have been horrible.

If you recall, in the Tulsa game we benefited from several calls against Tulsa. Not saying they were not deserved but I wonder if these mixed conference officials are over compensating to not give the impression of home cooking.

These were the most one-sided refs we have had all year. All of the other crews we have had have missed calls in each team's favor. These refs seemed to consciously not flag Rice at key times, and consciously flag SMU at other key times.

Against Tulsa we also got a 15 yard penalty because the refs didn't see June Jones call timeout. They were just bad refs.

Amazing that d1 referees would say that on the ES holding/personal foul that the penalties were offsetting. One happened during the play and one was after the play with the late hit out of bounds. Did the booth call for the replay or was it Jones. Pretty bad when coaches have to point out the rules to the referees.....and don't get me started on Sterling Moores sterling defense back coverage with inside position on the wide receiver and then the penalty called on the db with the wr going all over Sterling's back to try and prevent the int. With instant replay and reviews, it is showing just how important it is to get good refs must have both quick and good judgement instincts.

Did anyone else notice that the crew chief would ALWAYS announce a a timeout or 1st down as 'Rice University' but would only say 'S.M.U.' in the same circumstances? I wonder why he didn't say 'Southern Methodist University'?

Because the school has asked to be referred to as SMU from what I have heard. I have never heard that Rice University wants to be called RU.

Why not just say 'Rice' instead of the 'University' part? I began wondering if he was so proud of his alma mater that he felt it necessary to say the full name each time. ;)

Do officials always say 'The UNIVERSITY of Texas', 'The UNIVERSITY of Alabama', 'Texas AGRICULTURE and MECHANICAL', 'The UNIVERSITY of Southern California', 'Texas Christian UNIVERSITY', 'The UNIVERSITY of Michigan'? (I think you see where I'm headed with this... ;) )

I understand the SMU part. I just laughed at the 'Rice UNIVERSITY' phrasing each time.

I have to disagree. All of the flags we got were deserved except for Sterling Moore's PI call on Rice's last scoring drive. That was really bad. Other than that, I had no problem.

There's holding on every play. The question is going to be how blatant is. The pre-snap stuff, our backup center is moving the ball around 3 times, the holding penalties, the PFs including one on a hit out of bounds are pretty stupid. We can control that stuff but what do you want the official to do, look the other way?

All I know is that our OL coach pretty much aired out the line following one promising possession that blew up because of the flags.

Everybody around the country is complaining about the officials. It's not just us. Heck, Urban Meyer just got tagged for $30K for blasting the officials -- following a game that he won?

The whining over penalties is a national epidemic. You play through it and you deal with it and you move on.

I always have problems with the holding calls when the holding occurs so far away from the action of the play to have no affect on the outcome of the play. That was the case in the call on Sanders. McNeal was 30 yard past the point of the hold when it was called and the hold had no material affect on McNeal's run. If I recall correctly Sanders was on the opposite side of the field from where McNeal was running.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

The refs have been exposed this year. The SEC has been awful - just look at how LSU got jobbed during their game at bama. It won't be surprising if the SEC coaches start picking up weekly fines for their comments.

The little 12 hasn't been much better.

CUSA may be viewed as a lower "classification" conference (like high schools) and we get the lower tiered refs. The Sterling Moore flag was criminal and needs to be addressed by the conference office, just as other calls that were questionable.

Well, with one more win, it's not going to matter too much. Unless it costs us one of the last three games and Houston loses one. Then there is an issue of Peruna magnitude.

Yeah. I think we are a training ground for officials trying to get to the SEC.
